Questions re: roundworms!I want to treat ASAP. Help! I have broody hens

I agree with the "easy = Digging puss plug from foot". looking at it as getting the gunk out makes sense. It's more like debriding a chicken wound. I will enlist help tonight. I could see that the plug moved, and was hoping it might soften, and be easier to remove after another cleaning/soaking tonight. I am so over "wait & see" method. I just want my happy healthy chickens back!
You agree with V, and then neo & wraping to keep clean once I am finished digging though right?
Should i give her electrolytes in her water after her "procedure"?
By exact knife to you mean a small utility knife, or an exacto knife like people use for crafts and detailed cutting? I have both. Whats the best way to sterilize the too before I use it?
We used a utility knife.
I chose not to wrap the foot up and both of my feet healed nicely.
Neosporin is good.

Ok Popcorn is back in her crate. Post procedure. I soaked for 15-20 min. Then husband held her while I did the cutting. I cut around the edge of the scab, and that came right off. The large one bleed a good amount, and looked like a hole in her foot when I was done. I flushed it well with the V. The smaller one on the toe, and other foot didn't seem as much like I took a plug out of her foot, and more like I cut off scabs. I think some "softer puss" i was able to squeeze out, but not much other than blood. No "plug" that I could find in those two. Swelling had not gone down since last soak so I think waiting wasn't the answer.... She would have been better by now if that was all it took.

She looks a little traumatized. I took my time, but tried to move as efficiently as i could. Husband got nauseous. I filled the one hole & covered the smaller two with neo. I decided to wrap both her feet.

Should I leave the wrap on for a day or two to give it a chance to heal? ... as long as it looks clean of course. She was panting pretty hard once we were done, and wings slumped. I gave her scrambled egg, and a little salad (which she could have cared less about). I also gave her a couple drops of rescue remedy.
I feel so bad she looks sad. I hope I did a good job. I don't think it looked as bad as some online. Which is good, but I also didn't get as clear of a kernel as I've seen pictured.

You did good.
Leave it wrapped and let her rest.
It will take her a few days to feel better.
She will, don't worry.

Thank you. I needed to hear that. My hands were shaking! I will be happy to let her rest.

On another note... in between going to work, daily chicken wound care, my broody hen abandoning babies, and noticing Popcorns foot. I totally missed that this past week was supposed to be my re-worm date. I totally missed it. I said I wouldn't & I did! Friday was day 10. I just noticed when I was writing down we treated Popcorn. I was so relieved to finish that round of worming, and then found that wound on the same day. Will I mess anything up if i give them their dose tomorrow AM? Tomorrow is day 14. I don't even know how I missed it. The days are going by so quickly. Will it be too stressful for Popcorn?

Good Morning.
So I didn't do any worming this morning. I want to be sure i'm not just dosing medicine all willy nilly. I understand the 7-10 days was for worm eggs that hatch.
Does this mean I have to start over? Should I just bring some poop to a vet? Should I give the 1x dose, and just keep getting rid of the eggs for 2 weeks after the dose?
I'm frustrated that I missed this, but I guess my brain, and life have been very full this summer.

Popcorn was laying down in her crate this morning resting. She finished her scrambled eggies. Just letting her rest today.

I want to finish the worming as best as possible, and refocus my energy to coop expansion/rooster pad. At least two of the new chicks are faverolle roosters so far. The boys don't love being separated, but everyone else is so much at ease it's the best option. The girls still go over, and visit through the fence so they are still part of the flock, and roosting with everyone at night. We just have to get it straightened out before cold weather comes.
It's alot to get done in between going to work, eating, and sleeping! I need more hours in the day!!

I am so greatful to have you @KikisGirls for support/advice this summer. I know that once everything is back in balance this summer will just look like growing pains. I've learned so much! My first aid box is getting more, and more complete.

Girl...just give them the second dose today...it will be fine. One day...three days...same thing, don't worry.

So I gave them the second dose, and I'm happy to have that be over with! I'm so paranoid about the poop now! every bit of something that is stuck in them I can't help but look for worms! poop test from now on!!

Popcorn rested for two days. I kept her feet wrapped. Then I let her out toward the end of the day so she could forage a bit, but not walk around too much. Yesterday she did NOT want to rest. She was up, and active. So I let her out (with feet wrapped), and then checked them out last night. They were a little dirty for being out, but I cleaned them with V, and they look good as far as I can tell. the dirt washed off, and no black scap, just nice dark red. Her one foot that was the most swollen, and had two spots is still a bit swollen. The other foot the swelling has gone down. I re applied more neo after the V dried wrapped both feet just to help keep them clean, and she is outside today with the rest of the flock. Should I just keep monitoring the one where the swelling is still present. it isn't red or warm any more. That is the foot where I removed the most "plug like" scab.

I am going to post a pic of my hen with the wound on her side later. I just think it's incredible the healing that has occurred in such a short time!!

Thank you so much @KikisGirls for sticking with me through all this craziness (including my loss of Vern). You have helped me get through this summer, and I have learned so much. Having experienced, calm, and clear support when your freaking out is a life saver!

I lost my last original gold laced wyndotte to our local fox this week. She was 3, and one of my more alert hens. She was always hard to catch. I'm looking forward to dealing with more "fun" projects like getting our coop expanded, and building our rooster pad addition. Making our chicken garden/back yard more safe for the chickens while the free range, and the area at the woods edge less friendly for predators to hide in (we call fox alley, because he hides there and picks off the hens in the open yard) ....You know the things that I thought i was going to be dealing with this summer Before I discovered mites....

Thank you! Thank you! :clap:clapNow on to the rooster threads to figure out what we need to have everyone set up and safe for our rapidly approaching VT winter!! :caf

You did great!
After today I'd leave Miss Bumblefoot alone, just let he play with her buddies.
If you got the pus out, the swelling will go down, it just takes a little while.
She will be fine.

Sorry to hear you lost your GLW, Predators stink!
Girl you better get busy building that bachelor pad...the cold weather is going to be here before you know it and it's no fun working in the freezing cold!

Keep posting updates.
This is like your own personal blog! ;)

Thank you! I've been leaving Popcorn alone while I get going on the roos.... 2 of the 3 spots on her foot the swelling has gone down, and back to normal. The one on her toe is still swollen though. It doesn't look worse, but it doesn't look better. She is starting to limp on it again, and I noticed her laying down yesterday. Should I just give her another foot bath? Maybe I didn't get all the puss out of that one spot? My poor popcorn. I don't want to have to dig it out again, but that is the spot that didn't have a plug. Everything else seems to be getting back to normal though so it's been nice to be able to enjoy them more. This website is wonderful!
