Hello All!
Please help. I am having the summer from hell with my beloved flock. They have been wonderful for 3 years, and this summer has turned into a summer full of chicken lessons. Through it all this forum has helped keep me sane. I'm hoping for more support now :fl
Today I went to the coop, and on the poop board was disgusting round worms! I had noticed poopy butts a while ago... I treated for various other things as poops looked overall normal just more watery in some. They are moulting so i thought that maybe.... Our rooster numbers arn't ideal right now so i thought maybe my lower girls were a little stressed....It's been hot and muggy so I thought that... I always use vinegar in their water (and had been slacking a bit) so for the past couple months began being more diligent with it again. I also feed the girls garlic when i can think of it. I am going to post a picture, but based on research i'm pretty sure it's round worms. They free range daily, have access to a million worms, and slugs. We have been working on drainage in our back yard due to all the rain this year, and so they have had a ton of fresh dug soil to scratch through.

Here is my plan (after researching here): To treat ASAP with Wazine. I'm going into town tonight and will try to grab it.

Here are my questions : Should my second treatment in 2 weeks be wazine again or should i get a diffrent one like safegaurd and use that?

I am worried about the variety of sizes in my flock. I currently have 14 chickens. 1 has two small 4 week old chicks. 1 hen has 5 that are not quite 2 weeks old. 2 are broody, and have been sitting on eggs for almost exactly a week now. They both appeared healthy, and well when I set them on eggs. Coop was cleaned totally, and I have been using DE in the corners and nest boxes. :barnie

Can I let my broodys continue to sit? should i treat them with the wazine too? Their poops have shown no signs of worms, and were not of the hens with watery poos. I would be super bummed for them to not hatch. My salmon faverolle who is sitting now is the whole reason I got roosters! They are due on 8/5.

What do I do with all the worms on the board? Are my chickens going to eat these? Do I start a fire, and burn them? I am beyond grossed out. They are currently still on the board. I just put a glass jar over them so they can't get away, and am letting them cook in the sun.

How do I clean my yard. This chicken must be pooping them everywhere right? I have read that if i find them like i have in only one poops other chooks most likely have them too. correct?

Finally can my dogs get these worms?

I think this is all my questions for now? Please give any advice as soon as possible. Shopping for medicine overwhelms me. Usually natural methods work great for us. i am diligent with the coop cleaning, and scraping poop boards. Just trying very hard to get my flock health back in balance!

O M G you poor thing.
I would treat the entire flock with Safeguard and skip the Wazine.

I must add...your "natural ways" did not work if you are seeing worms.
Usually they don't even poop worms out intil they are infested with them and have no more room in their body to hold them.

It is always best to get your chickens poop tested by a vet at least once if not twice a year.
It is very cheap and pretty much all vets will test the poop, even if they don't treat chickens.

I feel like this is the point where most people would have given up by now! Obviously what I was doing wasn't working. While dealing with the Mites, my husband reminded me he haddn't seen me add the ACV. So I started up with that again, but my girls must have already had them. My poor chickens! I check my poop boards religously when I let them out every morning, and check their little chicken butts every night with a head lamp. My husband thinks i'm going crazy, but I love these birds!
This is the first wormy poop, and the only one I've seen that looks this. I have ready how bad it is once you see them in the poop though. I feel like a bad chicken mamma. I'm learning all sorts of hard chicken lessons this year!!
I will remember about the vet tests, and put it on my list of annual critter poop tests.

I read that safegaurd liquid for goats or equine paste can be used? I'm getting ready to make the trek into town now...Our local TSC is small i hope they have what i need. I know that their labels arn't going to say OK for chickens. Is it going to be ok for the younger birds too?

Avc will not prevent worms.

The paste for horses is good, so is the other for goats.
Either will work and TSC carried them both.
You'll find some there.

I did not mean to sound harsh with my earlier post but a lot of people seem to thing that ACV or De or garlic will prevent worms...they simply don't and no one wants to believe it until their chicken, who has been on those things, starts pooping worms out.
The medicines will work and I personally think fecal tests are the best thing in the world (not really) but they are important so you don't have to give them un needed medicine.
A simply tests once or twice a year will let you know if you need to give the medicine or not.

I read about the DE during my mite odyssey. When I first got my chicken flock I asked about worms, and if my chickens would need any regular vet checks. That's how I learned about ACV was from him! I have been using 1T:1Gal like clock work for years! it's so easy to believe that it's working because you don't seem to have any issues. I appreciate the apology. I appreciate straight answers though. I was horrified to see the worms. I didn't even consider that was what was off. I was sniffing for sour crops, and checking for bumble foot. Everything I could think of because i thought ACV was the secret weapon. I think i might investigate the "other vet" i considered during the time Vern was sick. Maybe my vet is just better with dogs, and cats. Not so reliable with his chicken info :(

You would not believe how many people post this exact same thing...
about using "natural" daily/weekly methods of preventing something then freak out when they actually see the worms.

I read....I read a lot.....I spend hours JUST reading all the threads in this section of BYC.I may not always speak from hands on knowledge, but I trust me when I tell you you are not the first and won't be the last.
I'm glad you caught it in time before your burying your birds.

In at TSC now. Is one safeguard easier to administer than the other? Ps am I giving this to my chicks/pullets too?

I'm sitting here reading threads, and being indecisive. I've read now that the fenbendazole shouldnt be given to molting birds because it will stunt and deform their feathers, or to give to nesting birds?! @KikisGirls help :(

@casportpony i remember you have been beyond helpful to me this summer too! Any help here? Which will be easiest to dose given my poor math skills, nesting, and molting chooks?

When you see worms like that in the poo, it is time critical to get them treated. A worm load like that will kill them.

Look into it for details, check with @casportpony for dosage and etc--treat with safeguard ASAP and the valbazen in 10 days. Consider treating a couple of times a year too. You can have a vet perform a float check before if you like but you will have extra safeguard and valbazen so you might as well use it. Worming will not hurt the chickens.
