Questions re: roundworms!I want to treat ASAP. Help! I have broody hens

Does this look like a good electrolyte recipe? I can add it to their water today.

1 cup water
2 teaspoons sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
Use full strength on severely ailing chickens, otherwise mix into their drinking water as needed, a cup per gallon of water.

I will update later. I'm supposed to be outside helping mill wood! Oops ;)

Looks Good!

First of, Not true in THE LEAST.
DE does prevent bugs, trust me.ACV prevents colds.Garlic in yogurt helps them.I know this, because I have done it.

Second, I am in no way educated for curing Worms.Sorry, Best of luck!
:hugs

Your natural ways may help them. But it wont expel worms from there bodies.

So everyone got electrolytes for the past two days. Mommas, baby's, broody's, everyone. How long should I continue this for? I gave it mixed 1c/gal water.
There were more worms yesterday, but this morning there were none visible! More poops looked formed and normal. Popcorns poop was more like a soft cow plop then the liquid mess I posted before. Popcorn is looking off. She isn't quite as slumped, and I did see some worms in her poo yesterday. Her crop seemes much softer then some of the other girls at night, but it is empty in the AM. I can see no other "questionable" issues, and am hoping she really just needs hydration, and more time. I gave them some fresh Mozz. for a protein treat Sunday. Yesterday was cold, and rainy all day. I made them some warm oatmeal with scrambled egg in it. I saw some chasing bugs around the yard, and am taking that as a good sign! I have my calender marked for 7-10 days to give one more dose. Vern's pullets have 2 more doses. I am happy to be weighing them so I can see how small they have acctually gotten, and also see their progress.

I'm sure these things are all stressing them out but you must get rid of the worms first.
I am so glad you now believe that ACV will not prevent worms..
I wish EVERYONE would come to this realization BEFORE they see worms.
I am very happy for you...and I feel you are going to be able to save their lives...
Worms can kill!
I'd offer them some higher protein for a few weeks to help them get back into "shape" faster along with vitamins.

It is wild because the whole time I thought I was preventing worms. It's aggravating when you think you are being proactive. I totally will be doing poo tests annually now. My poor chickens were getting sucked dry from the outside with Mites, and inside with worms! seeing the size of those things I have no doubt i would have been buring chickens soon. I"m sure they would have starved by now if I didn't spoil them so much... I have 3lb faverolles!! It seems some have gained a small bit of weight back already. Maybe just from being more hydrated, and less worms on the inside?

Thank you for the well wishes! I am totally all about natural solutions, and prevention. I had mites this spring, and used spinosad, and DE with success. I have continued with the DE in their dust area, broody nests, and nest boxes. I will continue it as needed into the future. Garlic is one of the girls favorite treats, and I use it regularly through out the long winters here. My girls will be getting a bit of yogurt tonight for a treat, and celebrate the last dose for now! I will probably also continue with the ACV... I actually make my own, and the girls get ACV or Kombutcha scoby's depending what I have at the time. Both turn to vinegar with live cultures once they ferment long enough. We use, and swear by these methods for our own health as well as my chickens! I will continue all of these, and do believe it helped me have healthy hardy chooks! You only have to know about the crazy season they have endured so far to realize they are tough birds!
As far as the worms go, I think that the wide misconception (my vet is the one one who told it to me, when I was inquiring about chicken care before I even had my flock) is that the ACV with PREVENT the worms... My story is deff. evidence that is not true. I have no doubt it boost their immune, and helps gut health. But I was wrong to think I was treating them.

I think this is the misconception totally! I thought I was building their immune, and creating an invironment where they couldn't get worms/ACV would get rid of them if needed. I will continue to move forward with the methods i was using. I don't think they hurt, but adding a poo test each year also wont hurt!

This season in VT has been incredibly rainy, and wet. We have been dealing with drainage issues in our back yard/chicken yard. Alot of excavating. Digging better wire in around the coop (Mr. Fox). We also had a wood lot close by, that we moved to further away. I think the wood was increasing our bug/worm/slug population. Our conditions have been frustratingly perfect for bugs. We are also gardeners by trade. so digging holes, and rearranging plants happens alot (With new drainage planned out we have been revamping the chickens gardens too. My girls are in earth worm heaven! I'm not going to try to take a big healthy worm from the chickens, but am now aware, and will catch this much sooner if I need to do this again!

I'm sure everyone talks about how helpful this forum community is, but it really saves lives! I hope I continue to see improvement. Now I just have to sort out my overzealous roosters! (Mr. Fox again took too many hens this spring)... They need to have a bachelor pad. There is always more to learn, and read! :caf

I'm glad they are on the mend but I want to remind you that the DE did not get rid of the mites...the spinosad did. So do not expect the DE to prevent them. DE can't work at killing anything if it even has one drop of moisture in it, and there is no way it stays 100% dry if it's been raining.

You might want to switch them all to a grower feed for a few weeks...the higher protein will be good for them. Just offer calcium for the layers on the side. Keep the treats to a minimum until they gain some weight back too.

Great plan!
Also, give your hen Popcorn scrambled eggs in the morning until she perks up.

Safeguard is a good one but it is better IMO to dose each chicken separately straight to the mouth to insure they are dosed properly.
Under dosing is just as bad as not dosing.
