Depending on whether he has to pay to be put on a waiting list or not would make a difference to me. I'm not overly fond of the whole idea of pre-paying for what might be available at a time that may or may not fit into my own schedule. I've known people to start taking pre-orders when they do not even have the parent birds yet.
Yes, his phrasing was rude, but he is obviously feeling like he is being taken for a ride. IMO, you should not take money for what you cannot deliver--until you CAN.
