Quiet breeds for urban coop

Tell me about it! Dogs barking all hours of the day and hearing the train until 3 am is all fine but a cockerel crowing heaven forbid my town tolerate that.

Can’t go wrong with Leghorns. :)
Same here - dogs, fireworks, trains, & city trucks roaring through our neighborhood in early AM all okay, but we better not hear any chickens or roosters!

Ain't it the truth!

My neighbor who's asked me to quiet my rooster has teens who are non-stop the entire Summer with loud music and partying. I mean All. Day. And. All. Night. But I have to say he was nice enough about it (as a former chicken keeper himself) and the teens are, at least, not waking us up at 5:30am.
People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I live near a major street that runs through the San Fernando Valley, a busy freeway and a large hospital. Chickens and even my rooster aren't noisier than constant traffic, ambulance sirens and motorcycles. Then there are things like construction and tree trimming that go on at random making major noise. We have nightly choruses of coyote howling. If people live with this stuff they can live with some chickens and, yes, even my roo.

Meanwhile, I have one neighbor who loves hearing Rocky, my roo. She says he cancels out some of the above and makes her feel like she's still living in a natural world. Her reaction reminds me of when I used to hang out in the corner of my yard before I had chickens. I just liked to listen to my neighbor's hens clucking at one another. I think it's a lovely sound.

Hope the OP found the chickens he/she was looking for and is now enjoying them thoroughly!

I think some people are going to complain- no matter what- because THEY are unhappy.

We have wild chickens and roosters everywhere around here, 2 bus stops running along the main road, hunting dogs fighting in cages, people fights, falling apart vehicles, trash trucks, raised trucks, diesel trucks etc. etc. etc!!!!!!

I had a neighbor who liked to drink a lot and hated a lot about... A LOT. He had loud parties and walked his and others properties yelling random hateful things at no one in particular. Me and my chickens were definitely on his "hit" list even though wild chickens ran through his yard on a regular basis. He was always threatening to kill me or my chickens or a neighbor... that did not go over well with me at all so we had a few confrontations of course. The fact was my chickens were legal.... the end. Thank goodness he was renting and after a few years and lots of horror stories I finally put enough evidence, cop calls and pressure on his landlord to evict him. Cant believe she was so selfish she let it go for so long- total jerk.

Another complaining neighbor and boat mechanic used to work on his boats in front of his house and when his yard was full he would park and work in front of ours... and also would throw his dog over our fence for us to baby sit...???!!! He moved also... thank goodness!!!

My auntie, who was also a neighbor to all the above, used to complain about my chickens every move and sound. I worked hard to keep them quiet and clean. Then, her friends would come by and visit and gush over them, so now they are a source of pride for her. She can't wait to catch me and tell me stories about what she saw our pets doing, ya know, the chicken/cat/dog show. I just keep giving her eggs and what I have in the garden... ;) but oh brother! Chickens... really???!!!

Now-a-days, our neighbors stop by to admire our girls and talk story- he he!- I'm grateful.

We have two Sicilian Buttercup hens, and 37 other breeds. I don't know if it's a breed trait, but my Buttercups never sing the egg song. They are not prolific layers and are somewhat smaller than some other standard breeds. We get an egg about every other day.
Some of our EEs sing, some don't. Our Marans girl doesn't sing and she is our biggest bird, she lays about 5 eggs per week.
Our noisiest songsters are OEGB, our black rosecomb bantam and the singing EEs.
