Quiet ducks

I agree with GQ something must not be quite right with duck to be quacking at night.
I did not know that. It is not my duck and it is impossible to contact the neighbors (even other neighbors say this). We can only communicate with the duck and it replies with quacks.

Maybe it's an only duck and is scared or lonely. Or they leave a light on and keeps it awake. Do you know if it's being cared for?

It is suspected that the duck is only being 'adequately' cared for (shelter, food, maybe kiddie pool) by the neighbors. I'll ask if my sister can see a light keeping it up (giant shrubs block vision of it). It is a single duck, so loneliness might be an issue.

That's sad, ducks are flock animals and really don't do well on their own. especially if no one is paying any attention to it. But hopefully if they are providing the 3 things you quoted at least that is better than being tossed out by a pond in a park and made to fend for itself. To bad there isn't someone willing to approach the neighbors and offer to give the only a home with their ducks. Make everyone happy.

There would be the cause right there, as ML said ducks are flock animals. To raise a duck singularly requires dedication well beyond most peoples abilities. Are the owners just oblivious to it's constant quacking?

I agree with the above posts. A single duck makes for a lonely duck which therefore makes for a noisey duck. I have 9 ducks, the females include Pekin, Indian Runner, Swedish, and Rouens. They all quack pretty loud with one of my Rouens being the noisiest. When it becomes dark they are silent until morning. The only time they will quack at night is if they are disturbed, they scare pretty easy. My ducks often sleep in a corner of my garage(odd I know, but they like it in there). I never hear a peep out of them when they are in there.

I would, but all the other neighbors say there's no way to contact them. I tried to contact them months ago just to ask what kind of duck they had and the setup for it, but I got nothing.

You mean they won't even come to the door?

I hope someone still checks this thread.

We have 10 ducks-- bought as straight run hatchery choice & ended up with White Pekin, Fawn/White Indian Runner, & Swedish.
The Pekins were my favorite, but have gotten ridiculously loud. All the girls are loud, but the Pekins are the worst.

Mine quack ALL.NIGHT.LONG!!!! They are enclosed safely in their pen with food & water. No other animals are out there or bothering them. No added light besides the moon & a normal street light out front. I haven't slept in a week.

I keep hearing the only quiet ducks are Muscovy, but I'm sorry I know this sounds awful, I think they are so ugly & don't want birds that will fly.

Is there another breed that would be second quietest or at least quieter than what I have???

Thanks!
