Hello, I’m currently the owner of two bluebell type hens which are the noisiest pair I’ve ever met, to the extent I think I’ll have to rehome them before the neighbours complain. If I do that I would want to get another couple, but what breeds would you recommend for an urban backyard? I like Wyandotte’s but I’m reading mixed messages about their noise levels, any help on that appreciated!

This is a tricky question to answer. You will find individual members of any breed with very different personalities. For example, the wyandotte I had was a quiet little thing who had a very soft voice like a finch. I didn't have her long as she developed cancer at 5.5 months of age and had to be euthanized.
My RIR, PBR and BA are all soft spoken.
My Delaware and SS and occasionally my LHs are godawful loud squawkers!
All of my EEs are very quiet. I can't, off the top of my head, recall anyone complaining about a boisterous EE. They tend to be rather low on the pecking order and a bit reserved. Perhaps they would fit your bill for a quiet urban chicken. Not to mention, give you lovely colored eggs!

Welcome to our FUNomenal community! :frow

As @DobieLover mentioned, every hen has it’s own personality, no matter the breed. Be prepared, though to hear each of their lovely, unique and sometimes very loud egg songs!

My Brahma is gentle and very quiet, as well as my Lavendar Orpington and EE’s.

Good luck!

All of mine are very quiet unless I talk to them. When I talk to them, they chatter, but it's not loud. Except for my Brahma, who is like the mime of the chicken world. My Cochin is very quiet EXCEPT for her egg song - she sounds like she's dying!
