Quiet Rooster project

Man, I'm glad I don't live in the city or near any fussy neighbors! I love to hear my roos crowing! A few times in the extreme cold we had this past winter, I'd have to go out to load the wood furnace at 3am

. Had to turn the porch light on, which is in the front yard, coop in the back, but the boys would see the light and start crowing in the coop!

All I have are Black and Blue Copper Marans, and they are all loud, especially Clyde, and all take great joy in saying their piece all day long! All of my boys started crowing in the house in the brooders. Seven and eight weeks of age. Try explaining that to non-chicken folk while on the phone!

I'm sure they all think I have free range house chickens! I might make a note here that I noticed; the loudest crower is also the alpha roo, and the most aggresive breeder. Makes me wonder if the tone and volume of the crow has to do with it??

So far we have:

brahmas,yokohama, bantam cochin and shamos as being quiet
More quiet roos include 2 for EE, (one that never crowed but didnt act like a roo), 2 for seramas,
(one being for a weird crower), Salmon Faverolle, Phoenix, (only in the morning)
Mille fleur, Houdan, Silkie, and one buff silkie.


Marans and orps are at both extremes.



Delawares are loud. We got two very loud and frequent crowing dominiques, amber sexlinks are loud,
and two more LOUD ORPS. A loud silkie.

Are we seeing any trends yet?? Anymore maran roos?

Quietest roosters I've ever had are Japanese bantams (Chabo). They hardly ever crow, and when they do it's very soft. Cochin roosters I've had were also softer voiced and crowed less frequently.

How you house them can also help. My barn is just wood boards and shingles, but when I close the door at night, the crowing of my louder birds (all my roosters are bantams -- Nankin, OEG, Belgian D'anvers, "barnyard") is completely muffled.
During the day, I only let my chickens out into the run after the neighborhood is awake and making noise. The first screaming child, barking dog, revving lawnmower... and that's it! Chooks go outside. They usually settle down after 10-15 minutes and then they don't crow that much. Bantams can have soft crows or penetrating ones, but they don't seem to travel as far or hit as high a decible level as standard roosters.

Anyway, yep, sounds like a new Ameraucana starting out. When they mature to a full crow, they're my favorite in terms of how the crow sounds.

My LF huge Cochin roo is fairly quiet, but they are terrible egg layers. Well, the eggs are just so puny even if they laid every day. My Silkie roo is a crowing maniac, he is so proud. Proving himself I suppose. My Marans crow loud, but just when disturbed and early in the morning.

I had a big ole light brahma roo that had a very soft crow. He hatched out the same time as some ducks
and considered himself a duck and even um err...even dated a lady duck.

Hi all... I've read bits and pieces on this forum and finally decided to register because... well, because I have backyard chickens

Anyway, I think the quieter rooster project sounds like a WONDERFUL idea. I haven't had chickens consistently all my life. We had them growing up and I've had some for the past few years. I have a rooster that is supposedly half buff orpington and half araucana, but I don't really know. Anyway, he starts crowing at 1 am and, although he does take breaks during the day, he never "quits for the day". When he gets on a crowing jag, he is sometimes crowing for 10 minutes straight. Not sure why, but he seems to often do this as closely to me as possible... Any advice on getting him to be quieter?
