(Forest) "Have some of this," Whirlfur said, nudging little Magpiekit toward a mouse. She was feeling very tired and congested. It was the sickness, coming to her. She couldn't get her kits sick, could she.

Cardinalflutter halted, and signaled with her tail for the others to do the same. Her brilliant blue green eyes were fixed on a mouse scuffling among the leaves in search of nuts. As the others fell in at her sides, she flicked her ears, indicating the prey. She looked at both apprentices, and in a hushed mew, said, "Before Cougarpounce or I teach you anything, we want to see what you already know and how you put it to work. You're going to have to decide who goes first, and remember there will be other prey and more chances, so don't be sulky if you don't get to go after this particular mouse."

"I can go first," said Beetlepaw confidently.

Deerkit looked up at her mother. Her pelt was shaggy and looked as if it hadn't been groomed in moons, her eyes were dull, and her voice sounded like a frog.
pathetic! thought Deerkit. There's no way I'm going to let myself grow up thin and frail like Mother.
"fine!" she said dropping the prey at Magpiekit's feet. "enjoy it while you can. Mother won't always be there to feed you!"
