I've posted quite a few threads about coop ideas... But here's another one. Tomorrow we're supposed to be going to look at a chicken coop and run for 6 new chickens and our 5 guinea fowl. This is our guinea coop right now... hence how dirty it is(today's cleaning day). I have 9 hens and a rooster that are waiting not too patiently for a bigger coop. And this one has 6 nesting boxes. It really should get a new latch, a new floor, a new or renovated roof, it needs to be more winterized, and I'm trying to find a way to make the big wall swing out to make it easier to clean out(I'm too short and have to stand on something to even have a chance to clean it out). I'm thinking of bringing the floor down closer to the ground so there'd be a bit more room and it would probably be a good idea to make it wider. The run will probably be scrapped even though it's in good condition or I'll use it for something else(we'll see). Any ideas?
Thanks,
Madie.
EDIT: it's about 5'x2' now

We use our old run for a hangout place for the hens to play. They lay down, take dirt baths, and chase each other in it. It's just kinda the lounge
My father's a mechanic so he brings home bald tires all the time and I'm thinking of snagging a few for dust baths. And I'm probably going to do a big t-post run.
EDIT: but I might use the old run for breeding.

Just because it has 6 nests doesn't mean it can hold 6 birds.
5'x2' would fit maybe 2 birds.
But with no light or ventilation...I wouldn't put any animal in there.
I know that 5'x2' is too small, that's why I want to drop out the floor and expand it. I already have(if I remember correctly) 13 2x3s, 4 landscape post... things, and 5 2x4s and I'm willing to buy plenty more. They were supposed to be for building a whole new coop, but I might just use the lean-to coop to help with the whole idea of it. It needs remodeling anyway, so we figure I might as well make it into a whole new coop.
But thank you, that does help some. I just need to get my head in the right place for this I guess.

You have 21 birds total?
In your climate you're going to need a mighty big coop,
and a covered run would be a good idea too.
Have you been thru a winter with chickens yet?

Sorry, I tend to word things a little oddly. We have 4 "coops" and about 60 birds on the property. We'll be hopefully adding another coop to the collection today or tomorrow.
I hope that makes a bit more sense. And yes, we went through last winter with chickens.

I wouldn't bother using this for an expansion project, it's simply too small to do anything with. You mentioned having 10 chickens needing a new coop. This hutch is 1/6th the size you'd need at minimum. I'm not sure if the guineas are supposed to fit inside too?

Economically starting a new build would be better, I'd think.

60 birds in 4 coops!?
I hope the other coops are not all this crowded.
No, they're not overcrowded. And if you're trying to imply that I don't take good enough care of my chickens, they all do perfectly fine and are in good health. Our largest flock is of 34 chickens. Then we have the 5 guinea fowl who will hopefully be joined by the new 6 once we secure the coop for them. We have 10(possibly 11 after a quarantine period) in a large outdoor dog kennel for a run and an old outhouse that was renovated very well into a coop. Another 10 are young and waiting on a larger coop although it is not yet completely necessary as was the purpose of this post. So if you are in fact trying to imply that I neglect my animals, you are wrong. And if I misunderstood what you were trying to get across I apologize.
EDIT: And just so you know, this was just an idea I was playing with. It didn't necessarily have to be realistic, or even a possibility. I have other people to wait on before I can actually build my chicken coop, so I am just playing around with different ideas before I get down to work.
