Rabbit questions

You sound like my husband. He don't care what they look like or how sweet they are. He will just ask what they taste like. Men.

LOL!

My question is..How do you tell if your rabbit likes you? Walter is so calm, and I think he enjoys my company but he's so hard to read, hah i know this is odd because he is a rabbit but still!

Rabbits are solitary animals and don't have the same pack needs as say a dog would. That being said in my opinion they are pretty smart and know the hand that feeds them and gives them comfort and play needs. My bunny is very social with kids but not so interested in us adults
And I agree with Mohillbilly about the biting part...but not the eating part...at least for my little George

.
My son in law does not get at all 1 why we have a pet bunny 2 why he lives in the house 3 why he is running around the family room and especially 4 why we would not want to eat him...

He is very loving! He will just lay on me until I am ready to get up, what sort of toys does everyone get for their rabbits? I got him some chewing sticks and timothy hay cubes, but I feel like he needs a toy! Oh and he also has a tube of hay, he loves that!

Some cheap toys....
apple tree branches to chew
conifer cones (they love to pick these up and throw them about)
my bunny's current favoite is an empty klennex box (make sure you get all the plastic off) filled with hay
old stuffies
empty boxes with both ends open

I would like to throw in my .02 cents. Mini Lops do NOT make the best pets. And they aren't so mini:

6 pounds on some of them.

Holland or Fuzzy lop 2.5-3.5 pounds.

When compared to a french or english, yeah they're mini. They're also my least favorite rabbit to handle on the show table. They're bitey and skittish.

I prefer the giant lops had one that was over 3foot long weight was around 35lb when he was full grown.. I have a pic of him sitting on my picnic table and he stretch from one side to the other...I only had him to breed my does.

My mini lops are not like this. The ones I started with, that had never been handled nicely where, but all the offspring I have are friendly, calm and quite, Except for Alfie who is so not calm! He is also not bitey at all, or skittish, he is up in your business, pet me , love me, hold me, carry be around , all the time! I just wanted to say, that not all Mini lops are bad. THough for a smaller child I would actually reccomend the hollands just because they have smaller claws and legs etc. in case of accidents

I personally have had...
~Flemish Giant Doe- she is giant but very lovable!! Every time I come to her cage she meets me at the door begging for attetion...

~Mini Rex buck- sweetest bunny ever, way a sucssessful show bunny before I got him and was super calm

~mixed breed, shelter buck - very entergetic and loving... loves to be pet!!!

~Lionhead Doe- Best Bunny Ever!!! Very entertaining , loves to snugggle, and a joy to have around!!!

In my experience any rabbit can be the best friend you've always wanted if you are willing to put the time and effort into them...It helps to be consistant and start at an early age...My lionhead I got at 8-weeks and she has been one of my most well behaved buns, aside from my Rex who was amazing because he was a show rabbit... My mix on the other hand is nice but would rather me not pick him up.... A last example is my Flemish who I got in the summer and worked with alot, but then school started and I neglected to pay any attention to her... she is still a good bun but not as socilized as my Lion....

What I am trying to say is that breed does matter alittle but what will really determinds a perfect bunny is if you are comited to work for what you want.
As long as you love your little bun for his whole life, you two will be just fine. Don't give up if things seem tough!!

I have meat rabbits. A California buck and 2 New Zealand does. They are all very sweet and are great pets. They are skittish when you are reaching for them, but once you have them in your arms, they are calm and seem to like being petted. I think if we kept them in the house and they were handled more often, they would be more friendly. But they are out in the barn and you have to go through 3 gates to get through them (had to goat proof everything

) Keeps them from being OVERhandled by my kids. LOL. They need their nails cut big time, though, and I keep meaning to bring my cat's nail clippers down...
