Raccoon attack HELP!!! Photos

Great pictures! It literally looks like it gnawed on her neck, and by no means am I a chicken anatomy expert, but it appears all internals stayed together in their general vicinity.

The Microcyn is good for superficial wounds, like that crack on the back of the neck. But it does appear there is total skin loss in the front wounds so stay away from those parts. Overall, its looking good. Keep irrigating with sterile saline/water and continue with wet to dry dressings with a protective gauze wrap. The recovery will be lengthy for all the granulation to fill in and heal, but it will happen.

Vets have injectable antibiotics that slow release allowing continued effectiveness and saving you the trouble of having to crap things down animal's throats. As far as organs, the wounds extend deeper than "topical" or "superficial" but I see no apparent organ presentation. From the original pictures, I was concerned her crop may have been exposed, which may or may not technically be an organ, but it seems a sort of bird stomach to me lol.

Great job! Keep at it!
Ok...so i of course am busy these last few days with family. I have continued to do saline rinses and neosporin, really slowed down on antibiotics and started throwing more probiotics in the mix cause she has a combo of normal stool and dark sticky diarrhea. i really slammed her i think.

i am wondering if i should be lubing up her neck. i manage to neosporin everything else and its all healing slowly but surely. To lube the neck or not lube the neck?

the crop is definitely something i would consider important like an organ. thank god that wasnt exposed.

So your moist dressings probably dry out before you can cycle them I imagine, right? Triple Antibiotic cream with a petroleum based vaseline like cream will assist with maintaining the moisture while combating pathogens. I am assuming we are starting to have some scabbing and maybe some regeneration by this point?

I wish they had a collagenase for chickens...

If not the 3x abx, then simple unscented petroleum jelly. I'm no vet, this is the first time I have seen the pictures on a good quality computer. On my chicken, the layer of skin that remains had been torn down and away from my chickens spine. I do not know what to call this sheath of tissue, but the epidermis on yours is clearly gone so it may be the dermal layer. All in all it looks like she was skinned alive in those areas but that neck tissue looks largely intact which bodes well for her.

I think prognosis is great! Triple antibiotic ointment (not the cream) and/or unscented vaseline to maintain moistness covered with clean gauze wrap. Would love to see updated progress photos when you have a chance.

I had already posted about a collagen based product...

Below I have posted a picture of a product that I have used before on huge open wounds and it is like a miracle. It requires no prescription and can be found at many farm stores or purchased online. From my understanding, this same product (main ingredient is collagen) is now being extensively used for human application with burn victims to assist in regrowing skin. It is a very thick gel/salve and as such I would apply it liberally to the exposed flesh with a gloved hand/fingers. (gently of course). I keep it handy as part of my emergency medical kit.

Just checking in... how's your girl doing?
How is she? I just read the thread. Assuming she made it?
About 2 hours ago 6:30am —- a raccoon got one of mine. This time of the morning is surprising. He got the Buff Orpington and she is in shock. She is pretty beat up so all this advice is awesome. Reading as I clean wounds.
