farming or the stewardship of protecting your livestock
Isn't providing a secure and safe environment to begin with considered protecting your livestock? I think it is. Dont get me wrong, I feel for the OP that lost so many birds, but I also think its a shame on the birds part AND the racoon's. I am new to keeping chickens, but I DO know that dogs and racoons and other predators can get thru chicken wire. I also know that predators can open windows or tear their way into a structure. Do yourself a favor, spare yourself the grief and go the extra mile to be the best steward you can be. And if I read a post like this original one, or if I ever have to post the same, I hope someone tells me - it was my fault before it was the racoon's. I am mature enough to handle that reality.
