Raccoons Coming During Rains

I am among the living again. The raccoons have not really left. I bet they are not sleeping more than 1/4 mile away. Traps will be kept armed and baited.

Sky was cristal clear until about 0230. Then started sustained heavy rain. Dogs got out and ran something off from near where southern trap line located, Dogs do not realize we need not chase if to successfully kill.

We got a young adult opossum during the heavy rain. Rain stopped for about 20 minutes, then started up again. Nasty.

I think half dozen will get me back into good sleeping and chicks running free during day. I brought a pup out to participate. She is barking up a storm. We have a strong line of storms coming. Pup and I will go to lab to check on fish and chickens before that hits. Heavy weather like that will keep chicks penned anyway. Pup also started jumping her pen wall and gets out, in with chickens in adjacent pen. She stays with me until purchase a cover. Eventually need four covers so I can stand up straight in the poultry pens.

We got 2 inches in the last 6 hours. Nasty. We been getting better than an inch a day for almost 2 weeks. That on top of a wet spring.

Thirty pens with birds and well over a hundred birds. Most birds in groups as chicks or juveniles with three breeding groups of adults. Two pens have only a pair each. Pen location is the overiding factor. Those in shade, with exception of Aseel hen and chicks, are getting raccoon visits. It is really hard to keep raccoon out when ground vegetation thick. That is why we have a plan for sheep to clear about 3 acres behind house. Trees will be culled to leave a good canopy yet enough space for me to drive tractor.

Marshmallows and cat food have been the default bait, but I assumed the corn would work since that is what they have been coming up for. They can be used in addition to sweet corn.

vienna wieners work well too if you happen to have any in the cupboard

My kids help a lot, plus funky work schedule makes caring for birds easy most of the time. Predators are part of the fun.
