Raising geese for meat - doesn't mean you don't care about the animals

We will butcher in May too, and before then as well since we have a 1 week old litter again.
advantage of not having our winters.... But I dont think you could even grow enough rabbit to burn Jerry out . He loves fried rabbit

Thanks Psue, well I am gonna try and give them some chuncks and see how they do. I know the chickens will go crazy with them. Well gonna go and do the 2nd part of chores. Will check bag soon.

Thanks Oregon Blue, I cut them up but they haven't found the yet. If they do and eat them they I will give them more. What else can you feed to geese that wont break the bank.

I confess.... I too cull some of my geese ad I also sell some at Christmas to my neighbours.

Mine have a great life here - they free range during daylight hours, are fed well, their housing is cleaned thoroughly every day and they have fresh drinking water - they are fortunate to have a river and mill pond here to enjoy every day ( excepting when it is frozen over in the Winter ) and I give many of them names and individual attention..they are the hardest to part with BUT we need to eat and also sell to support our other animals financially.

We hatched "Mellow" in Spring 2011 I adored Mellow but he became aggressive towards our others so..... we changed his name to "Christmas Dinner" - he served our neighbour well!

This year we hatched "Freddie" who is my favourite Toulouse and he/she will stay with us for life.

Thank you Celtic for raising the issue - it is refreshing to know that I am not alone in my concious decisions to cull when it is necessary for whatever reason.

I've been away from this board for a bit, did I miss something?

I don't have a problem with people butchering their animals to eat, they are a food source after all. I personally won't be butchering any of our ducks or geese, but then we have a small number and don't breed them and bought them as pets. I've tried duck and goose before and didn't care for the flavor, I've butchered chickens before and didn't care for the end product but then I don't really like chicken. When our farm is fully up and going we will have a yearly pig for meat and a steer to put in the freezer. We live on a farm for a reason.
