Raising our 1st set of CX meaties

I'm in the FL Panhandle and had the lady bug invasion you just mentioned day before last as well. I never noticed it before but I sure did when I was painting our coop and kept accidentally squishing some flat with the paint roller.... they would land right before I would roll over that area so it was unavoidable.

You have me sooooo wanting to move just so I can start raising my own meaties as well.

Well, just got a surprise change in weather :/
Just got home from work and gotta go back in a few hours. I need to crash so I don't crash...
Chicks are still in the coop. We sealed the door fencing in plastic and 2 sides in plywood. I dumped two 55 gallon bags of dry leaves in with them. Inside is about 70 degrees. Fingers crossed the can hang. Going to stay in the 40s tomorrow.

We couldn't sleep so we went out to gather chicks and put in the brooders before the low temps hit. We lost 8. :(
My own #!&%$@ fault.

For the next week they're indoors back under controlled temps. Hope I didn't kill them all with a respiratory issue now. ALL survivors seem just fine. I'm at work but hubby had to clean up the mess :( he says each chick is crazy fast, peppy & peeping. Ug.
Newb assumptions kill, always go with your gut. We were tired and assumed we provided shelter warm enough but almost just scooped them in to the brooders before hand because we weren't 100%...almost :(
Remaining 39 are weighing an average of 12 ounces.I'll check on each when I get home this afternoon for any respiratory issues.

How are the chicks doing? How old are they now? how upsetting about the 8,sorry to hear that.

My set of 15 are shipping out next Wednesday. I suppose I'll get them on Friday? Still no brooder built for them. I'm trying to build from a nice pallet, but dang, those things are difficult to piece apart. Buying wood is so much easier! Also, I'm thinking of biting the money bullet and getting an Ecoglow. I'm so uncomfortable with leaving the heat lamp on during the day while we're gone at work.

Chicks are ok, not ranging but an hour here and there due to really low temps this week. I like them outside lol they weigh in at about a pound each.

Messy inside. But warm and alive.
Crook neck has splayed legs now :( found her with one out to the side and the other trying. Ug. She's a trooper tho. I will get her situated shortly. The rabbits had a litter late last night, hubby broke down this morning, arranging help has kept us busy & panicked, downside of being a hermit lol
Just got confirmation of a Jan 3rd delivery of 50 broiler chicks! Doh. Gonna be busy! Hindsight tells me large batches in early fall may be better than through winter :hmm but we shall see.

Messy inside is what I'm not looking forward to.

Survivors all doing well.
Started a 12/12 schedule. Well close to 12/12.

Looking good. How many did you lose as of today? I am preparing to keep all of mine in the garage under heat lamps. I have to buy more heat lamps before they get here Jan 3.

2 of those have splayed legs and one Crook, still not really growing but hanging in there. I should not have list the 8, roomy mistake. But we are adding a few bales if hay in the hoop coop next week and they be outdoors til butcher! Make it or break it lol gotta set up for the next batch coming on the 3rd lol doh.

Heat is important, very important 1st couple weeks I learned.
