Raising Quail.....Do You Need A License????

We have Cortunix and they are quiet, don't eat a lot, don't need a huge pen, give plenty of eggs and good on the table. They do make a call but it isn't any louder than a wild bird bird singing. That's nice, you must have gotten hold of someone that knew what they were talking about. I talked to the head of that particular department and she didn't have a clue what button quail were. She asked around and no one there knew either. She said "you cannot have them as pets, anyway, you can only get them to raise, release and kill". She knew about coturnix quail and other breeds, but had no clue about buttons.

Do you have buttons? Is there a different license to get for quail that you raise to breed/sell than the ones you get to hunt/kill/eat? She was very confused when I talked to her and I got off the phone with her even more confused than when I called. I did the permit thing, anyway, but still not sure what the rules are since she couldn't tell me.

^^^ Button Quail i'm pretty sure EVERYWHERE are considered a caged bird species like a pet parakeet which you don't need a permit for.

Coturnix in most states you don't need a permit for- they are a domestic quail.

Bobwhite in most states you do need a permit for (if you're selling or giving them away but if you're keeping them for yourself as pets, you don't need a permit, but no releasing them if so).

It was actually very easy for us and we talked to the same person. This was the jist of the phone call

Answer yes

Question #2 Do we need a permit to raise for our own use even if we never sell any
Answer yes

Question #3 If we sell then what
Answer You can only sell to a person with a permit and you must record their permit # on a receipt, to sell to out of state requires extra paperwork.

^^ did you ask them what species of quail? Seems if you dont specify they seem to think you're meaning Bobwhites (in my experience but once they realize coturnix ---atleast here it's a big "oh no no you dont need a permit for those just bobwhites and phesants and such".)

Yeah, I must have confused her right away by asking about a species that she'd never heard of. I guess I should have just asked for all species of quail. I did ask about coturnix, but again, said only if you're to release to hunt and kill which I have/had no intention of. (I didn't get them, either, was just curious what the laws were on them.)

(Not that it matters since it never worked out for us, anyway. My son would still like some in the future, though.)

She told me that about all quail. She looked about buttons, but said she couldn't even find them on google (which was odd since I looked on google at the same time).

He specifically wanted buttons.

Ah well, maybe I can interest him in a chicken breed again! hehe
