Raising Urban Chickens in Jacksonville, FL

I am located in Jax, Fl but we live on 6 acres near neighborhoods, but we never had a problem with keeping chickens. I would check to see if you have a HOA and the laws about it. I know legislation is pending to allow everyone to at least own up to 4 chickens in Jax.

can anyone tell me if iam allowed to have chickens in beach blv university area
Depends on your zoning - check http://maps.coj.net/website/DuvalMapsSQL/viewer.htm

Search for your address and then scroll down and check to turn the zoning layer on, then hit refresh. AGR and RR zones are allowed to have chickens but they have to be a minimum distance from the property line so lot size comes into play.

Hello. We live in the Avondale Area and are serious about possibly getting chickens once we figure out the zoning laws, ordinances, etc. I was simply wondering if anyone could give me a link on where to find that zoning information or a contact to call an official to ask. And don't worry your secret is safe about the chickens.

Google Jax GIS or check the link i posted above and you can search for your address. I can go ahead and tell you that you are not Rural Residential or AGR if you are in Avondale and those are the only legal zones.

Check Facebook for the 'hens in Jax' group to get more info on our progress to get backyard chicks legalized. If you want to pull the trigger on some chicks now, you'll probably be safe - they won't be big enough for anyone to notice before they're legal.

The most important thing is to check with your neighbors and make sure they support your girls. I live in a historic neighborhood and my neighbors love my girls (and the free eggs we give them).

I'm here on the southside of town with 4-7 week old hens, just trying to keep up with hens in jax to see when the next city council meeting is so I can show up.

A funny story: My son has been working out of town for the last year, he came back home 2 weeks ago and I showed him the new chicks and told him not to tell any of our neighbors. He went over to freinds for alittle while and on his way home 6 houses down from me the neighbors were out chasing 2 full grown hens in there front yard. LOL
