It may be an unpopular opinion here, but I believe in gun control. Note - the word is control, not elimination.
I had neighbors in the past who liked to fire guns randomly into the air on holidays, birthdays, days when their favorite beer was on sale, etc... There was property damage, a couple dead animals, and at least one bullet hitting the ground near a person. People like that had absolutely no business owning guns and if the cops had shown up to confiscate their guns and inform them they were permanently banned from ever purchasing more, on pain of a jail sentence, you can bet the whole neighborhood would have been cheering.
And that neighborhood included several other gun owners.
I don't think any civilian really has a reason to be owning automatic weapons, or 'assault rifles' (read assault rifles as weapons designed to kill large amounts of people quickly, not as 'scary looking weapons' as it is currently defined) or any reason to be owning ammo that can penetrate bullet proof vests or take down a plane. If someone does have a good reason (good reason is not 'they are cool and I want one) then I'm fine with some sort of variance. But frankly unless your house is in imminent danger of a stampede of water buffalo, do you really need a gatling gun?
I'm fine with handguns, and concealed carry permits. Wish more responsible people exercised that right. But the whole bringing guns into a bar thing does kind of make me nervous. Seen way to many irresponsible drunks, and I don't want one of them to have a gun on them. I also don't want someone with a gun around these jerks to decide to prove how big their ego is by shooting them instead of leaving the bar when the drunks get belligerent.
I am fine with before you can purchase a gun, you have to take a gun safety course, and I think the gun safety course should include being taught how to properly load, unload, clean, secure, and of course, fire the gun. And I'm cool with you having to do that 1-4 hour course every time you buy a gun, no matter how many times you've done it. I'm also fine with you having to repeat the course every year to maintain your permits.
I want to ensure that all responsible people can own a gun if they so desire. But, the simple truth is, some people have no business owning anything more dangerous than a nerf football.
