Rant: DBF posted meatie pic on FB, now there are haters

I have 6 meaties right now, and I tell you......... I dread having to process them. I think I might even dread eating them, but I'm going to. I didn't go through this for nothing. But, honestly.... I don't think I'll ever buy anymore. I think these are nasty little creatures

They have no feathers on their bellies, thier butts are bare, and look revolting to me. They do have the prettiest eyes I have ever seen, and I"m starting to feel sorry for them.

Am I doing something wrong with them? Or am I just use to super fluffy Silkie butt?

Your doing nothing wrong. Do these people think that our Walmart Chickens are grown in a dish in a lab or what, LOL.
 
I wanted to try meat birds......so we did for the first time last year. I cooked store purchased chicken one night. The next night I cooked the same cuts of our chickens in the exact same way. It was the best chicken ever. So much flavor. They were pasture raised.

In the past year I have cooked chicken for a couple of family members. Everyone that has had a meal of chicken with us stated that it was the best chicken they had ever had. So after the meal, I would let them know they were OUR chickens.

Most people cannot believe the difference in taste. It is radically different to me.

Store bought eggs - I hate. Never have liked them. HOWEVER - fresh eggs, I am liking the buttery smooth rich taste.

If I was met with a lot of hate or anything extreme for how I raise birds to eat, I would be sure that person saw a video of how supermarket birds are treated. Not very nice of me, I know.

Your DBF did a great job with handling it by posting what he did.



I have a picture of DH preparing to process, DD helping but covering her eyes...it was our first one. After that it was easier. She actually cleans them inside now

I do think the meaties are easier to eat & cook than older roosters that get processed. The meat is so tender!

Now my BBW turkeys had no feathers on their bellies but we figure it was because they were past processing time.

BTW no other chicken is as prissy and fluffy as a silkie

There really isn't any cure for ignorance and one just has to keep on keepin' on despite the ignorant people of this world. I'd have posted a whole slew of very graphic photos of the processing if I were you....there is no law against killing your own foods...yet.

So many people these days are so far out of touch with how the real world works.

If someone makes the personal decision to not eat meat, good for them, but it does not elevate them to any status where they have anything to say about others choices.

I just ask them if the third tooth over from the center of their mouths was put there for eating celery.

CX chickens though a result of industrialized farming do an incredible job of turning grain into meat protien. When pastured yourself reusing the fertilizer I don't know of any much more efficient, less energy intensive way to produce meat.

Don't let someone look down their nose at you for raising and havesting your own chickens, they are the ones with issues.

Nevermind the 100 mile diet, I'm on the 100 yard diet of things I can grow, raise or hunt within yards of home.

I'm sorry people freaked out. I had posted a whole bunch of pics of my first "harvest" and everyone just thought I was odd (okay, or maybe they already knew I was odd). If you get anymore issues, tell the person to watch Food, Inc.

ngamtnman - I didn't know about Zuckerberg; That is really interesting, and huge publicity for honest meat.

Elite Silkies - Two weeks ago I was in your shoes, absolutely dreading processing. I think the dread was worse than the actual deed because I'd been thinking about it so much, and studying it for months. Plus, I took care of the little buggers, for so many weeks! I will admit, I cried just a little, and was exhausted at the end of the day. Good luck, you can do it.

I'm such an soft-hearted person, I'm still amazed that we pulled this off. I relied on the ugly-factor of the CornishX to help me stay emotionally neutral. I think I would have a harder time w/ heritage breeds.

I had "Delicious #1" with pasta & basil last night. It was so good.....I said it before the deed, and I'll say it again:

"Thank you, Chicken!"

glad to see food inc recommended. if you can find a showing FRESH is worth the seeing, it gives you hope that we can make our food better for everyone
