RANT NPIP!

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

Seems to me that I read somewhere that chicks hatched from NPIP stock are not required to be tested... I could be wrong, but that makes sense to me. Otherwise, why would there be a certificate if every bird had to be tested anyway?

That's what I was thinking?

One of the TN staff vets just came to do my flock this past Tuesday. He tested 25% of my birds, filled out paper work, and the fee was $25.00. He was super nice and said he would call me about the same time next year. He said I could add birds to my flock, but I would only need testing once a year.

That's good to know...I wish it was that cheap here, too!

Are you sure you are talking to the right people? I did get the run around in Nashville before I got connected to the right people and I was getting all kinds of crazy information before I actually got in touch with the right people. He did say that all states are different and that TN uses its USDA NPIP money to subsidize the cost of the tests for the flock owner. I guess it just depends on where you live. Sorry you are having so much trouble. The whole process only took about 1 hour.

I am a state certified tester here in Ok. Depending on the size of the flock 100% of the birds must be tested the first time. No matter where they came from. If you are planning to add new birds or hatch eggs they must come from NPIP stock in order to be added to the current flock with no additional testing and you must have a tranfer form supplied by the seller. If the birds came from sources other then NPIP they must be tested before adding to your flock.

As far as the fee it is up to us to determine that and I usually charge .50 a bird and depending on how far I have to travel sometimes a little gas money.

WOW! In FL testing is a free service! Seems to me having to pay (in times like this) ensures that people are LESS LIKELY to have their birds tested.....

hmmm..if this is a NATIONAL Poultry Improvement Plan, doesn't seem there is a lot of consistency.

I live in a VERY rural part of the state. Our tester had to travel an hour to get to me and it was STILL free.
