Rantings to stop eating Free Range eggs~ please respond !

I think David is probably her husband/SO/(insert preferred term of attachment here), so of course he's going to get upset that her little pet project is coming under fire. But you'll never convince that vegan that a "carnist" has a valid reason for anything they do with an animal, other than pet it. Clearly, she has her mind made up - eating animals or animal products is "wrong," and she has embarked on a crusade to enlighten her corner of the world on the wrongness of it. Raising food to feed chickens is wrong, because keeping chickens is wrong (since the only reason to keep chickens is for food); the space should be used to raise food that you yourself would eat instead. Anyone that lives in the sort of conditions where protein in the diet is supplied by livestock should instead be putting effort into raising plants that are protein sources. If I go down to my local hardware store at a time when they have chicks for sale, and I buy a chick (pullet, of course), I am indirectly participating in the death of her male siblings. There is blood on my hands, even if I never came within a hundred miles of the bloodletting!

When I hatch chicks, naturally some will be roosters. My DD names them, and I'm too much of a softy to kill them. I can't convince a person with this blogger's mindset that there is no way to "properly introduce" all those roo's that attack each other daily in the barnyard (some of which hatched together). It's my fault - I'm doing something wrong. And the ones that attack me on occasion? Obviously, I deserve it, since I'm eating the eggs!

I really don't see much point in continuing to post on her blog. If you support her views, she'll be glad to hear from you, of course. If you don't, you'll just add fuel to her martyr complex, and make her even more self-righteous in her determination to spread the gospel of veganism and the right way to treat animals.

I wouldn't worry about her. Compassion to a fault, that fault being very little understanding of how the world works and she clearly isn't a threat to the egg industry. Just look at the vibrant community we have here and look at what she's got. I wish her luck. A LOT OF LUCK.

We all know the saying 'all things in moderation'. Once you take a philosophy such as hers to extremes it becomes unworkable. Growing vegetables and fruit will cause harm to an insect at least. Natural fertiliser comes from kept animals. Above all, she is using animals to promote a business, that of raising money to buy land. When she has the land she will need more money. She's keeping animals while telling us that we should not. The very act of keeping animals is against her creed.

She can believe what she wants and will either succeed or fail. It doesn't matter to anyone else. The issue for us is that she lumped us in with factory farms because she cannot bring herself to accept that not all keepers of animals treat them cruelly. If she did accept that, her case would disintegrate. Extremists of any kind are self defeating if they expect to convert most of us to their views. I have never encountered an evangelical vegan before so I assume that most get on with their lives, perhaps hoping that others will follow their example.

In Catherine's case, I don't yet see an example. She is exploiting animals by selling books. The profits, if there are any, will buy land on which she will keep animals and families will be allowed to visit. She will be either a farmer or a zoo keeper. 'Sanctuary' is a red herring.

Very eloquently put. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Quote: It is a shame some feels it is an all or nothing decision. I never felt the need to point fingers and judge others just because I am not eating meat right now.I cook it up dailiy for the family.I read a huff story of someone raising, loving, and then killing 2 pigs for food. I thought it was GREAT.We would raise pigs in the village and kill one in the spring and one in the fall.BEST MEAT EVER!!!

Killed chickens all the time. I would totally do it for my family now,but I can't get them(kids mostly) past the idea that some animals we raise can be eaten.Beyond me since they eat the store stuff. How the heck do you get them past that-pet not food stuff?People seem to think raising your OWN animals for meat is far worse than buying meat at the store.Weird.

Alas, I guess I am not a *true* vegan anyway since I LOVE eating honey(and the comb).GASP! I think labels are silly anyway.Vegan,carnist,omnivore.Someone coming up with rules on what you should and should not eat. I eat what I like.If I kill animals I do it fast to minimize suffereing.Yeah, I kill animals.Predators.Even beheaded a sick chicken.

Maybe one day I will eat some animal flesh.Until then I will have no issue with those that do,and will keep collecting my eggs to be eaten by all. There IS a middle ground some just refuse to acknowledg e it .

she closed her blog from Accepting anymore comments from BYC-ers. quoted from her blog below.....

'Just a quick comment to say thanks to the posters from Backyard Chicken Forum for your comments, especially to those of you who actually read my article and were polite.
As you can see from my article I do not make much mention of backyard chickens, except to say that even backyard chickens from a hatchery or breeder will result in excess male chicks and that is one of the reasons why vegans do not eat eggs.
I did not search you guys out or post on your forum and this is my personal blog and not a forum, so I will not be approving any more comments from Backyard Chicken Forum. That side has now been represented and I have answered the comments.
Thanks again for your time,

Catherine '

not sure how she knows which posters are BYC -ers. I think she is tired of defending her literature and is not Accepting anymore comments that require it.

I would tell her that she is welcome to search us out and post on BYC. We have vegetarians and vegans here so why not? You don't have to "exploit" chickens to be a member and need help with raising them. And she may want/need the advice if/when she gets this Sanctuary up and running. But that's just me.
