We jad a problem a while ago. I ended up using poison--not my first 2nd or 10th choice, but it is still working. We use a bait box with the poison in it. We have to keep replacing it b/c it is getting eaten. Someone mentioned to me to tie a peice of bacon or some meat to the snap traps (Victor traps)--that way the rat has to stick around for a while to get it, thereby increasing its chances of getting caught.
It more than likely may have started out as one rat, but you've probably got many by now---saw a documentary on the critters--they reproduce like crazy--could it be a squirrel maybe? They like attics...
