I have been fighting this war myself. Ive been trying to perfect a no spill feeder.
I tried the one with the 3" PVC 90, but my rooster couldn't get his head in. His crown stopped him. I figured hunger would get the best of him, it didn't. He refused, he was not eating, so I changed my approach.

Im trying to get rid all of their food.
I meant to make my PVC feeder out of 3" tube, but came home with 4" by mistake. Glad I did. My rooster has no problem at all.

I solved the spillage problem with a 4" extension so they have to reach further to access the feed. Cap goes over the opening overnight to discourage rats.

Don't quote me because this my guess. Roosters are kind of like cats as far as a cat won't stick it's head into anything that it's whiskers can't clear.
Just an assumption.
Our roos could have forced their heads into my feeders with the smaller holes before I made them bigger, but chose not to.

BTW.. Chain link fence was an excellent choice. 2 out of my 4 pens are chain link. Never had a predator prob with them. My standard chicken wire pens are a completely different story.

One day out of the blue I had rats running across my yard they were everywhere. So I did research and found a recipe to kill rats or mice it's 1 cup baking soda 1 cup powder sugar an 1 cup oats mix together An put into cans for the rats to eat they will keep coming back for it because they love sugar. It kills them because rat cannot pass gas an it builds up in them an they die.You can also replace the baking soda with plaster if you have it an it would harden in them. After two days there were no rats anywhere.I did this because it's not harmful to dogs or cat or kids.

Thanks for the recipe. We use boric acid which is a powder, mixed with powdered sugar, to control ants. They also develop a gas and since they cant fart.... expire.
This commercial formula has same ingredients in liquid form.

Curious if anyone else had tried this and how well it worked?
Do they have to eat a lot or not?
How long does it take for them to start dying off?
