I knew what you meant, quaillady.
He is very careful about his health so he did get it taken care of. He wasn't supposed to live for very long after his accident in his 20's, but he is close to 70 now! He and I have been friends for over 20 years. He lives by himself and keeps his house clean, cooks, and does most everything for himself. He has some goats and chickens which his son feeds for him everyday. Years ago he would lay on his side on the ground and cut logs up with a chainsaw for firewood. My dad and I fixed his van up with door in the top that rolls back and a lift which he can wheel his chair upon and raise himself up above the top, and spin around 360 degrees for hunting. After years of hunting sitting on his lift sticking out the side and having game walk around the other side of the van, now he can shoot no matter where they are. He loves it. Anyway, aside from missing his toe he came out fine.
Hopefully that rat is a lone ranger and you can get rid of it soon. I haven't had any yet, but I live right in the middle of woods so anything could show up. I had mice in my old shop, but I made cages inside for my Speckled Sussex with little doors so they can go outside into their pens during the day. Since they have been in there I haven't seen a mouse. I am going to make a cage(s) at the other end of the building inside for my quail. The SS are my special babies as will be my quail. The get the fancy digs whereas the rest of my birds have sheds and a camper to get into. They have it pretty good too though.
