I've had many rats and currently have 7. Most of mine have been adopted from a rodent rescue group or people who could no longer care for theirs. For people who are interested in keeping pet rats, please consider their medical needs. Most unspayed female rats develop mammary tumors. A good amount also suffer from pituitary tumors and, when older, congestive heart failure. Respiratory illness is also extremely common and requires the proper antibiotics to keep in check. A rat can go from sneezing to pneumonia to death in a matter of days. When you keep rats it is a good idea to make sure you have an exotics vet in your area and an emergency vet fund. Chances are, you'll need both. Also consider that rats should almost never be kept alone. They are extremely social and need companions of their own species. I can only compare it to a human never having another human to interact with. All that aside, rats absolutely make fantastic pets!
