Rattie Owners??

My son and I have two black rats. We love them, they were given to us by a lady that just couldn't keep all her critters anymore. They are hilarious to watch, and now for some reason are fighting a little bit . . .they have a huge cage and plenty to eat and drink, so it might be boredom. I mess with them every day and they are so cute and funny. One is shy and the other one will climb right up on me. I think they make wonderful pets.

I have 2 femaile rats! I love them. We started with a boy rat named"Mollie" at school. He was the rat in a special needs class. He is the best rat I have ever experienced. So this led to all of us getting our own rats. I have ended up with Charlotte and Rosey. They were going to be classroom rats. Charlotte was having babies and we thought it would be a great experience for the kids to watch. Well, the kids loved it, but Charlotte did not!!! She became very mean. She was so protective of her babies. Good mama, but bad friend to humans. So I took her home and put her with her daughter Rosey and they are nice now. It has taken awhile, but they don't bite me anymore. They are so fun!!

I've had many rats and currently have 7. Most of mine have been adopted from a rodent rescue group or people who could no longer care for theirs. For people who are interested in keeping pet rats, please consider their medical needs. Most unspayed female rats develop mammary tumors. A good amount also suffer from pituitary tumors and, when older, congestive heart failure. Respiratory illness is also extremely common and requires the proper antibiotics to keep in check. A rat can go from sneezing to pneumonia to death in a matter of days. When you keep rats it is a good idea to make sure you have an exotics vet in your area and an emergency vet fund. Chances are, you'll need both. Also consider that rats should almost never be kept alone. They are extremely social and need companions of their own species. I can only compare it to a human never having another human to interact with. All that aside, rats absolutely make fantastic pets! If anyone is looking for an amazing rat forum go to Goosemoose.com and join the Rats Rule forum. They also have an adoptions section with TONS of rats looking for good homes!
