Petrie the Barred Rock is making a gurgling sound... similar to a cat's purr, but doesn't sound like a growl. She is panting, but it is very warm out today. She was going in and out of the nesting box for about 10 minutes, then she has been staying in the nesting box for about 30 minutes, moving around the hay and stuff... is she going broody or does she have a disease AND going broody? I have yet to see her drink today... but she's been eating. When I opened her mouth, the gurgling, rattly, purring sound got louder. It sounds like a cat purring with water stuck in it's throat? No other symptoms except the whole nesting box thing. Do I need to treat her? I'm gonna go check on her in a few minutes.

That sound is an indicator of a respiratory illness. She needs to be removed immediately so she does not expose the rest of the flock to whatever she has.

As far as treatment - just know that whatever you decide to treat her with, if her symptoms subside, will mean that she is a carrier for whatever illness she has...she will expose the rest of the flock, and in all honesty, you really should not sell hatching eggs from a flock that has been exposed to a respiratory illness. Very sorry...

Petrie just laid her first egg. The gurgling has stopped and she made a huge, watery, poo right afterwards. Could it have just been that the egg was stuck or something?

Gosh I can't imagine that was it, but if so, FANTASTIC! I guess just keep a close eye on her, it sounds like you're doing that already!!

Gosh, I have hens that have been laying for a year that seem to take forever in the nest before finally laying - so 3 hours is "in & out" in comparison to MY drama queens!

One of my hens, Penny, does the same thing! She's older, not sure how old because she is a rescue hen.... but she takes 5 hours to lay, squawking the whole time!
