Rav's Duckumentary - Call duckling babies (pic heavy)

Ohh you bet I have pics, it is caused from a case of melanism with the MC1R gene and a hox gene that releases the pigment into the feathers, melanism just makes too much pigment and well this is what happens... (It happened like back in 2011 or 2010) (this was the first)

(her daughter and nephew)

(her and her sister)

( both of her daughters, 3rd batch, with the call ducks )

( her first hatch of babies were these 2)

here second hatch of babies just had 1 but she didnt live too long

Im the only one in the usa right now with pure bred Black mallards, My family had been keeping a geneology track of the mallards they bred for shows and after she was hatched we had to go get a Dna test which showed that there was no mixed breeding or hybridization ( our pedigree also proved that) and it also showed that the MC1R gene which supplies pigment was not turned off by the hox gene(increasing how much the gene had replicated or something like that it is some degree of mutation). The hox gene distributes how much a organ / body part forms by turning other genes on and off. Anyway long story short they could go for about 1,000 to 2,000 dollars if I ever decided to sell them.

You're so very welcome. :hugs I tried to guess what your surprise was, but she wouldn't tell me till you found out first. Io is such a precious baby burd, but she is growing up!! Now just wait till she becomes Momma Io Burd!

Oooh oooh, Ravyn, does Io have a favorite drake???? Inquiring minds want to know!

Aw, that is so sweet of Ravyn. I really appreciate that. I knew right away what the significance of 1 elgg in her hand as all about.

And, yes, Io Burd is growing up fast. I wanna know, too, who her favorite drake is. I wonder....

700

Here they are, they had chosen their little dirty patch of the aviary where their waterer is, but have incredibly kept the rest of it so nice and clean just like we were hopeing.

:frow

While Your still designing  you might consider putn the water in a hardware cloth covered platform that drains out of the pen so that they can't play in the water they splash into the mud, and so it all helps you keep cleaner quarters :)

Good idea!!

Or dig out an area and layer with sand and gravel to filter naturally... I'd kinda like to do something like that...

I think the platform makes a big difference, I've had two, working on the third group of lings raised this way... Clutch #4 is only one more wk away! Also, The sand idea, very interesting!

Thank you so much for the idea, but the dirty spot is very small anyway and they have such a larger area to be in the clean grass and shade that it really isn't that big of a problem, it also isn't usually mud it's more of just really dry dirt like the grass had been pulled out and the dirt dried out :) becuase when ever they do decide to splash any water the sun usually dries it out within the hour

Thanks Mississippi :gig
