Does avc help prevent cocci

Vinegar has always been used as a water preservative. To a lot of the old military guys like Francis Marion it turned out to be their favorite drink for life.

I have a question about using vinegar in the water for chickens and dogs. I just started using it, and I am only putting about 1-1/2 T. in 1-1/2 gal. of water. I wanted to make sure they would drink it, and then gradually increase the vinegar. I'm using 2 gal plastic buckets with the nipple waterers on them. I also was afraid they couldn't get enough water with just those nipples, but they seem to be doing fine. It is true though, that if I would put their galvanized waterer back in, they'd drink from it, because it's less work for them, I guess!

For my two little dogs I'm putting a couple of teaspoons in a gallon of water and putting that in their fountain that runs all the time. In both the buckets for the chickens and the dog fountain the water turns slimy in a short time (3-4 days).

Am I doing something wrong? Should I be changing out the water more often than that? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Do NOT put ACV in a metal waterer, only use plastic, glass or rubber, NO metal, it will cause a reaction...............

They should do fine if you go back to the waterers.

Unpastuerized ACV is a form of probiotics which can boost an animal's immune system. Strong immune systems are more resistant to the affects of cocci. Probiotics maintain a normal and healthy level of culture~good bacteria~in the bowels which prevents the more harmful, but naturally occuring, cocci bacteria from proliferating to the degree that it causes diarrhea, ulcerated bowels, dehydration, etc.


I don't know about slime...my chicken's water disappears so quickly that no slime formation would be noted. The dog's water gets slimey anyway, as they tend to slobber in the bucket each time they drink. I'm sure slobber is increased when they taste the sour taste of vinegar.

This is such an interesting thread! I am happy I found it as I was told by a breeder to add ACV to water not only to help with parasites, but to keep the water slime free in the hot summer weather. I bought the regular ACV and figured I would search on here for dosing...so happy I found this! I will stop at the health food shore and get the right kind after work!

I have "unfiltered" ACV from Trader Joe's. I know it has been pasteurized, but does it still add any benefit whatsoever since it is "unfiltered"? Not sure I can find unpasteurized around here....

I don't think I've ever seen unpasteurized apple cider vinegar.
