Well, I have my first chicks hatching and so far, so good. I did have an early bird but I think this eggs might have been missed for a couple of days and I had 4 broody pullets hiding them

Today is day 20 and I have one hatch and 2 others pipped.

I am using an egg carton and don't think I'll use it to hatch again. I usually love using the egg carton, but there just isn't enough space for the chicks...and these are silkies. A LF chick would have no headroom if you used the egg carton.

Otherwise...plug and play...

Good luck with your hatch...I have 10 polish eggs and 9 brahmas in the bator...Do you think I should move them to the Hovabator for lockdown next week?...They would have more room in there to hatch...It has been my biggest concern that they will just not have enough room to hatch out and dry...

I think if you lay them on their sides in the Suro they will be fine. The carton just takes up a lot of space.

I only have 11 egg it for this hatch. My next hatch will at least begin with a full bator, so I'm going to put the rails back in and then lay the eggs down on day 18. I HATE the rails that came with it so I cut wire coat hangers up and taped on a piece the length of the rail to give it more stoutness. I also am adding some foam to it to hold the eggs gently. I'll post pics tomorrow after I add the foam.

Ok...here are the pics. I just took them a few minutes ago. All of them have 5 well spaced toes on each foot!!! That's a great beginning.

I made one mistake that I would like to warn others about. On day 18, pick up each egg and candle from both ends to make sure that you don't have quitters. I left them in the carton and just candled from the top. There were actually 4 that had quit somewhere along the line...probably between 14 and 16 day. When I did finally candle them completely, there were clear areas at the bottom of the 4 eggs and, of course, there shouldn't be.

So, out of 7 good eggs, I had 6 hatch. One pipped and died before hatching. For the life of me, I'll never understand that part of hatching.

What is the maximum capacity of silkie,cochin,and brahma BANTAM eggs can the suro hold? (That is the relative size.)

I did not use the rails for incubating...I bought a couple of plastic egg trays, cut one to fit in the bottom and it fits nicely...This way I did not have any eggs rolling around and the air could flow freely around them...Still experimenting here....

Oh I am sooooooo excited...I have 3 hatched (brahmas) 1 zipping (Polish) 1 pip (Polish) 2 pips (brahmas)...This is my third hatch and second hatch using my King Suro...So far this is the best hatch I have had...Come on babies!

Guess you know where I will be glued today!
