We have lived here 6 years, and peacock was here before us, living under our pool deck. We have never fed him and we coexist peacefully. All this time, and even with addition of chickens, I have never seen a coyote, fox or raccoon, and only 1 rabbit in all this time. We live in the woods. I've seen owls and hawks but they never come nearer than trees across the street. I can only imagine its the peacock protecting his turf?? My friends brother lives in a nearby town and coyote got one of his hens, so I'm sure they're around in the thick woods behind our property.
. We got our chicks in March and they were indoors until fully feathered, so no idea what a peacock would do with chicks. He does pick at stray chicken feed and scratch grains he finds around the coop & run. Before we got chickens, we did not feed him regularly, but I see him picking at plants and he eats my garden prunings. There are also a lot of flowers I can't have because he will eat them. Our neighbors may also feed him sometimes, cat food, stale cereal, or birdseed. I did notice when we went to the zoo, none of the peacocks we saw was as pretty as ours!
