Reaction to new treats!

Most live insects will do the trick. Even one day old chicks will consume like crickets although they may require their mothers help in dismembering each insect. Meal worms and crickets can be acquired commercially.

I think I will wait on any live critters until they are outside. My basement is mostly a quilting studio, crickets love cotton fabrics and if they get loose ugg. Now and then I get a cricket down there and can never find the noisy thing; I find dead ones in folded fabric occasionally or inside the rolls of batting.

Just try the live meal worms. You should be able to get them at more affordable prices from stores catering to wild bird enthusiast. In the past I have done some explorations involving treat options where meal worms were preferred above all other options listed in this thread plus most other insects and fish.

You absolutely must do the live meal worms! Then write about the pandemonium that ensues! You'll see where the human game of "keep-away" comes from.

My younger chicks got the teeny meal worms for the first time last night. Its amazing how quickly they realize that this moving thing is food, and then how quickly chaos ensues! LOL

I need to get my bigger brooder boxes put together and then try the worms if I can find them There is a wild bird store in town. I have the rest of the afternoon off work so heading outside to haul dirt bags to level the coop site. Hope I have enough, this will make 40 bags and it's the most level area in my yard.

So I just moved the chicks into a bigger brooder approx. twice the sq feet. They are not so sure about this: chattering in various tones about the change some loudly some softly. I also added a pan of dirt for dust baths so that appears to be a huge discussion. So funny watching them "discuss" everything. Left them alone for awhile to adapt. LOL. I know my parrot doesn't even like a new toy for weeks. He will yell at it a lot. They seem more adaptable than he is.
