By the OP, and it's just a tag added to the title, the thread isn't closed. It has value for those looking to help, because they can immediately see that the OP has got his/her answer. Anyone with a similar problem or with additional/useful information can still post if they want to.

No forum ever allows that, only admins or mods can edit or remove other posters' content. You can only ever edit your own posts. Some lock you out of editing the first post after there have been replies. An OP who deletes the first post obviously destroys the thread.

I don't think any user can move threads-if they want to go off on a tangent, they can start a new thread elsewhere. I've never seen any notes section, but I don't think it should ever be necessary to try to extract information from the forum because it's buried in 'chat'.

I would find it annoying. It shouldn't be hard for people to modify their behaviour and not post pointless replies.

Sure, that's not a problem. It's when somebody comes in and pipes up with something that's been said earlier in the thread, sometimes many times, by many different posters. Sometimes, it's not even in a long thread and it's obvious that the poster hasn't bothered reading anything anyone else has posted. (again, not necessarily on this forum, but it happens relatively frequently.) Some people see forums more as QandA and don't bother with reading other replies at all.
And who decides what is pointless or not?

But if attention is drawn to it and the OP or the rules or whatever say it's not AOK, then that should be different.

It is a voluntary Forum, if you will put more restrains on what is OK to say and what not, you will loose a lot of forum members, and that is a bad situation.
Not 'rules' per se, that can draw 'punishment' if broken,
just a reminder of basic forum etiquette.
Still hard to get these out where everyone sees them, reads them, and is willing to abide by them.

No insulting another forum member, and no sexual or racist comments, but no more further restrictions then this.
You don't think there's a problem with:
"my chicken is bleeding, what should I do? I'm so worried"
"do you like my red shoes or my blue shoes better? I'm having sausages for tea. Do you like sausages?"
"i like german sausages".
"Italian sausages are better"
"your red shoes are nicer. I bought pink shoes today".....

It is basic for replies to a forum thread to address the topic, on every forum.

Pretty accurate example... :D kinda funny, but not.

Huh?

Not "restraints", just trying to point out common courtesies. We aren't talking about not chit-chatting in already existing threads. Its when a crisis is at hand, don't you think the problem should be addressed before we hear what everyone is having for dinner?

Excellent example. I think its important to help with the issues before going off on hundreds of tangents. Its fine to build a bond with the OP, but I just think its more prudent to give them the assistance that they ask for first.

I hope not
