I think what ACTUALLY happens is more like this:

My chickie has a boo boo, what should I do? Worried!
OK, clean it, patch it up, watch your chickie, etc..

Post 3, seeing that it has been answered in the best way possible, then might ramble off topic..... no one *directly* goes south and ignores the original posters thoughts or question.

Then it's time for a reminder!

Yes, it is the standard dynamics, sometimes in one ot the next posts a new alternative medicine treatment is offered " use this essential oil" or somthing like this, and then more bla bla, and then someone else give another advice of future treatment if the situation worsen, and then more bla bla, a standard BYC THREAD!

Good point! You know how I said I wouldn't care if people wanted to debate in my hypothetical thread? Well, I guess that's not true, 'cause I sure don't want to read pages of posts about "snake oil", lol.

I'm curious, I wonder how many pages people read before posting? And would people be more likely to read more posts if there were more posts on a page?

I know I'm probably weird, but, if a thread is less than 100 pages I will read all the way through, generally, I will read all the way through before posting even if is a few thousand pages.... On one or 2 occasions I have PM'd the OP of the thread with a comment or question before getting to the end, but I have not posted in the thread it's self, and never one where it was a question being asked.

It's not hypothetical. It happened several times last week, which prompted this thread to begin with.

Here's what happened.... Someone started a thread asking for help. Whether it was with hatching, an injured bird, a sick bird, all these happened. The threads turned chatty, which is fine. That's not my point. My point is that even after the death, or the hatch was over, or the bird was cured, or whatever the result happened to be, there were extra comments about what the OP should do! The dead ones are especially hard, when i read of a birds death, then someone pipes in with "well, you could try this"! They obviously want to help, but they've missed the boat.

Just last week someone offered advice on how to hatch Lucky... She's fully grown and has a mate now...

I wish I could say the same. I usually try to read the first and last two, but sometimes I don't.

I just had 3 experiences this morning where It took so long to read all the replies and to type in my reply and only to find that another member has just posted my exact request or suggestion because of my slow typing & proof reading or my browser not refreshing fast enough to keep me from duplicating the post that just beat me to the punch.
There are so many people on this site sometimes that the heavy traffic causes duplicate posts.
If you can compare our sister site (Backyard Herds) which I am a member of, the traffic is like the slow lane on the highway, slower traffic keep right. Sometimes that is a good thing. I like the slow pace of that site because the traffic doesn't cause congestion in the threads.
The popularity of BYC is crazy.. Raising chickens is more popular than ever and so my newbies are counting on this site to teach them if what they are doing is right or wrong. The suburbs are filling up with chickens just as fast as this site is filling up with members.
The more this site becomes popular, more congestion and confusion will be in the over populated threads.
It took me 5 mins to type and proof read this. I hope after I post, no one else replied with a simular post.

I don't mind seeing the same thing posted multiple times, and as someone here said already, it means that it's probably good advice.

Do any of you use Facebook? I just got done reading about a couple of sick chickens on a chicken health page, and I found it almost impossible to read all of the replies, and clearly few people read all the replis before posting

This one was about a sick hen in sort of a penguin pose. Lots of the same and similar one line responses, and very few helpful comments. I wonder if some of the Facebook posting style has been creeping into forums?

Multiples(a few) of same good answers are usually OK......
....the ones that crack me up are the x4-x5-x6-x7 on 'what gender' threads
