Ready Set Hatch! Set 3/17 Hatch 4/7 - ready now! Hatch-Along

Is this gross? I am going to boil and crush the quitters and infertile eggs and feed them to the chickens. It's a great source of protein, fat and calcium and no waste. Might seem gross, but they do eat eggs and they will be fully cooked to avoid any risk of bacteria.

I only feed them if they are infertile eggs. Several common bacteria (staph aureus and e.coli) produce exotoxins which remain in food even after the bacteria is gone and can withstand high temps, so I don't feed them the eggs with blood rings just in case.

My daughter had back surgery tues so I have been commuting to the hospital, 60 miles each way; she got out today and is staying here in town with a friend for the weekend, then I'll take her to her house on sun night, spend the night, get the grandkids off to school and come home to feed and water, go back in the afternoon and do it again the next day. ;0

soooo I've candled a few of mine due on April 7 and they are looking good, tho I need to go through the whole tray; I think there is a duck egg due the 14th that has a blood ring ;-(

Checked a few of the ones that i just set the 24th and those looked good. Just waiting for my brighter light to come in so I can really see into the olive and dark brown ones. Right now I have light olive eggs and all I can see in them is the air cell.

We had planned to do candling again on day 14 but since that is Easter and we'll be quite busy with church, family, and most importantly the egg hunts... my daughter has talked me into doing it tonight when I get home from work. Twist my arm :) Keeping fingers crossed that our SF and Silkie eggs are each progressing as they should. If all look good then we probably won't candle again until we set up for lockdown - our incubator needs a quick transition to remove the turners. I'm so much more nervous than excited to candle, almost afraid to check egg #10. By this time next week we may have some pipping going on (at least in the warmer corner!) :D

Candling is always nerve-wracking, especially with precious eggs. These eggs aren't even mine and I'm still nervous! I'm excited though :)

Whoohoo! Out if the 21 still in there (removed clear dark egg I was afraid to take out - had a tiny blood/black spot only inside) we have........21 wiggly chicks! #10 showed some toes :D. Wish I could tell if it has 5 toes like mama!

We are at the beach until Monday and I am so worried about my eggs. My parents are checking in on them once a day but I really wish I was there to keep an eye on things!

Oh my gosh, you guys have been busy! But I've been sick and missed a few days. Still sick but well enough to get off the couch and sit at the computer for a while.

That's a touching story Wrightsx4. Go #10!!! I candled again at day 10 to get rid of the unfertilized eggs and found two more quitters, all in the coronation sussex department. I have two of the seven left. I'll be lucky if one hatches and even luckier if it were a pullet. We'll see. Saw movement in all five of the marans eggs and all six of our mutt eggs so good news there.
