Ready Set Hatch! Set 3/17 Hatch 4/7 - ready now! Hatch-Along

Cute chicks everybody!

The good news is that all 5 of my Marans are hatched, the little devils.  They all insisted on opening a big gaping hole and zipping agonizingly slow.  I also have one Coronation Sussex hatched.

The bad news is that I also have a Coronation Sussex with a pip on the wrong end. I don't think it's going to make it.  You can see the tip of its beak in a pool of yellow yolk and though it's moving now, I just don't see how it can make it.  Time will tell I guess.  I'm not going to touch it.  I have a dr. appt. to go to and I have 0 experience with wrong-end pips.  I think it's best to let it go.

Maybe you've already seen this - it's a really good article and does cover this situation:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching
If you haven't already, you'll want to read the whold thing but the part relevant to yours is about 3/4 of the way down under "Malpositions". It gives step by step info of when & when not to assist. Congrats on the new babies!

Is the yolk ruptured? I would worry if it is, but otherwise wrong end pips can be salvaged as long as they pip through a vein like mine did :\

Well... No action here yet :0(
I'm wondering if they may hatch slower this time due to the fact she is sitting on so many eggs.

We have noticed the last chick to hatch is a bit poorly. Not as active as the other chicks that just hatched.

It was quite a long pip and hatch for it, not sure if it is exhausted or unwell. Going to leave them in there to dry out over night and try get some sweet water into it first thing.

Fingers crossed a night rest helps it.

I did read that article this morning, thanks.

I believe it is, like I said, the beak appears to be in a puddle of yolk. The hole is very tiny, 1/8" maybe, so it's' hard to see but it doesn't look good. I don't think it was breathing yet but I'm not seeing movement like I was before so maybe it tried and drowned? I've got it covered at the moment, with a wet cloth. I'll leave it for a while and see what happens.

I did an assisted hatch at 4 am this morning. I went to the bathroom and cranked the shower on and made the water hot as it could be. Once it was nice and moist in there, I got gloves tweezers and took the egg to the bathroom and zipped around the egg with a small pair of scissors pulled the end off, and looked at the chick, he starred at me, we had a moment, I stuck the end of the egg back on him and put him back in the incubator and told him to do the rest. There was a little blood, but it hatched and hour later, and chick #1 and this one are now snuggled in the corner sleeping

A couple things for chicks who aren't looking great... Put some pedialyte in their water, or a it of sugar.

I have heard too... If eggs go past 22 days to break a small breathing hole so they don't suffocate. And then maybe assist hatching. I may do this, I am not willing to let them die in their eggs again. I opened 4 up last time who simply just didn't pip, I think they suffocated.

Sorry about the double and triple posting.. my phone ! And its not like it does them at the same time. The posts are minutes behind
