Hi all, my rooster got me by surprise this morning. Boy does this one hurt. It looks like his talons got through my jeans and may have hit my shin bone. I put Neosporin on it, but it's getting worse, like it's actually painful to put any pressure on that leg now. Does this need oral antibiotics or will it pass by tomorrow?
The cut on the bottom right of the photo is today's attack. The other red spots are previous attacks.

Clean and disinfect it, then get rid of the rooster. There is no reason to keep an aggressive rooster unless you're literally the only one in the country that has a male of that breed

Second that. If it doesn't improve in a day or so, get into the doctor.

No rooster is worth risking your health & safety.

Are you up to date on your tetanus shots? If so, the Neosporin should work well and be enough. And if you plan on keeping the repeat offender, you should probably invest in some boots that cover your shins. And speaking from personal experience, your shin will hurt like hell for a few days. About 45 years ago, I made the mistake of stepping between two gamefowl roosters that were sparring and one of those rascals hit my jean covered right shin. It felt like getting hit with a hammer and stayed bruised for a month.

Thanks for the advance warning. I was just concerned about gangrene or sepsis. My last tetanus was 3 yrs ago. I guess I will have him butchered. He's a good breeder and is very nice to the hens, and is also a good alarm system - he hollers whenever a car pulls into the driveway.

If you keep it clean and use anti-bacterial, should steer clear of infection but there is always a chance. If it's not improving and stays painful/tender and/or becomes red, inflammed and hot to the touch- then you need to worry.

There are plenty of good roos out there, no need to keep one around that is detrimental to your health. That's my opinion.

I was spurred straight on my shin once, hurt like hell, was sore for a week. It hurts! If anything seems off or more than it should symptom wise, get it looked at. Redness, heat, discharge, all should be checked.
I vote with everyone else, it's not worth keeping a boy like that. Mine was gone after that and I no longer keep the ones that even think about challenging me. There are too many good boys out there to put up with a bad one. And they can make keeping chickens very not fun.

Absolutely agree! I recently dispatched an aggressive roo. Stupid thing is I put up with him for a year and all that while it's been terribly stressful. He had pinched me hard several times, dances whenever I got near him, crows the whole damn day and does so even more when I approach the run. I don't regret it when he went into the PC ...he tasted fantastic! - the only positive thing about him!
