Really painful injury from rooster flogging

For those who want a rooster, try a Salmon Faverolles! They are the gentlest rooster I have ever met! My husband and "Tank" are best buddies. Tank lets me stroke his tail and he always comes when I call him.
The farther we get generationally from hatchery chicks, the more tame and effective in their duties the roosters become. We are on a 4th gen barnyard mix and our main boy is a like a loyal dog - despite being hatched by a broody hen and never held once, affectionately, his entire life. I believe they have a much stronger instinctual nature in terms of their pecking order and how they see us - where as a hatchery rooster has a smaller world view.

Don't get me wrong, those boys will absolutley Jack things up when appropriate - but they are highly intelligent.

Excellent post and I agree completely after having chickens for 55 years now.

He has who knows how many breeds in him, but he is also a monster. He weighs almost 13 lbs and we have never had an overly large breed here. Would be incredibly intimidating if i didn't know any better. But, of the hundreds upon hundreds, my favorite chicken we have ever raised.

I'm a doc and after a duty wound we recommend tetanus booster within 5 years. Also I think most docs would give an antibiotic such as augmentin for a puncture wound from rooster spurs. From what I've read they can be quite contaminated. Also if it touches the bone there could be risk of osteomyelitis (bone infection), so take these seriously. Cheers all.
Ok thanks! I did have a tetanus booster in 2019, and the urgent care doc here prescribed clindamycin and doxycycline for 14 days. It appears to have healed now.
