Really sick chicken- respiratory issues day 5 - treating w Terramycin

I only treat the ones that have signs of illness. If she doesn't get better with the oxytetracycline you might want to get some generic Baytril. Google enfloxil.

We are going to try the baytril. This morning her eyes were snotty again- breathing laboured and a completely liquid stool. None of our other chickens are sick so it's hard to imagine that this is viral in nature.

All the info I have says that much higher doses are needed. Are you using Tylan 50 or Tylan 200?

Kathy- we couldn't find Baytril- they don't sell it at tractor supply and I also tried to get it at our vets.. So we bought Tylan 50- it looks to me that I can inject 1/2cc in the breast muscle each day? I'm not quite sure.. There are a variety of different dosing instructions. What do you give your birds if you need to give them Tylan via injectible route?

Quote: I used Tylan once and it cause injection site necrosis, so I will never give it by injection again. If I do decide to give it, I will give it orally, and I will give it at 25 mg per pound twice a day.

Tylan info I found:

Quote:
CRD indications:

  • Administer medicated drinking water for three days; however, medicated water may be administered for one to five days depending upon severity of infection. Treated chickens must consume enough medicated water to provide 50 mg per pound of body weight per day. Only medicated water should be available to the birds.
Turkeys:

  • Administer medicated drinking water for three days; however, medicated water may be administered for two to five days depending upon severity of infection. Treated turkeys must consume enough medicated water to provide 60 mg per pound of body weight per day. Only medicated water should be available to the birds.

For those that don't have a gram scale, you can use this info to calculate your dose:

And this for the injectable:
