Really sick chicken- respiratory issues day 5 - treating w Terramycin

All the info I have says that much higher doses are needed. Are you using Tylan 50 or Tylan 200?

-Kathy

Kathy- you are right! We are actually giving Terra-vet at .2 ml which is oxytetracycline. There is 200mg/ml. It looks like Tylan is a stronger med. my husband came home at lunch because I was really worried that Henrietta wasn't going to make it and he ended up giving her .3 mls instead and was markedly improved this evening- she isn't spitting snot out of her eyes and her throat isn't going in and out like a bullfrog. If in the morning she goes backwards again then we will go get Tylan. It's all just a huge learning curve. I'm an RN but injecting a chicken? we may not have gotten into the muscle very well when we gave it to her yesterday and that might explain the worsening. We are using Terramycin on her eyes as well.

My Husband is somehow under the impression that terra-vet works better for bacterial infections and if the animal has a watery stool then that would mean it is most likely bacterial? I don't know if it's true or not but that's what gaged his decision on meds.

Some illness in Chickens is caused or manifested by poor nutrition....What do you feed your birds?
Not saying it is not respiratory...I believe it is...Once a bird has a respiratory disease it will carry it for life..No cures...Wild birds can spread it, even can come in on your shoes depending on what one they caught. If one bird has it the chances are high they will all get it...Separate the sick bird and get her to drink water..Do not change her feed by giving her anything else..You can wet the feed and see if she will peck it off a spoon...Keep her warm in a crate in the house...

Best of luck...

Cheers!

That's great advice- I'll try wetting the food.we feed them a mix of layered crumbles and then a corn/seed mix. And then of course they peck around all day for grubs and works! :)The three other birds seem really happy and healthy so I'm wondering if this could be bacterial? Would you suggest going ahead and treating the water for the other birds just in case?

My advice is to continue to treat with the Tylan (assuming you are injecting) and get LOTS of water in her. Even if you have to spoon feed it to her. I'd also add a supplement if you can, like nutra drench. It may take a few days for her to feel better..
Best of luck!

Thank you! I'm going to get her son nurti-drench tomorrow morning at Tractor Supply. I'm sure she needs it badly since this has carried on for days - partly because of my total lack of knowledge. It's so great to have a forum like this to find help. I called my vet and she just said..we don't do chickens. :) I'm going to be home with her all day tomorrow. If you would have told m me a month ago I would one day have a chicken in my lap spooning her water I would have said you were crazy. :)

I only treat the ones that have signs of illness. If she doesn't get better with the oxytetracycline you might want to get some generic Baytril. Google enfloxil.

Any thoughts on denaguard? I've been reading some positive things about it and treatment of mycroplasma. I was wondering if you have experience or thoughts?

I think it's probably a very good drug if you have just mycoplasma, but if you also have E. coli, it's not gonna work. Then there's the giving it... Seems that people have a hard time getting their birds to drink it.

Thanks Kathy, I have mycroplasma and picked up as a precaution.
I haven't had to use it yet, just curious if anyone had experience.
I'm currently giving ropa poultry daily.
