Really Tame Breed?

The tamest chickens I have are my pair of quail old English game bantams. They'll fly up and sit on me. The rooster will follow me around sometimes and cluck and coo at me and will try to roost on me if I'm out in the coop at bed time. The hen will run up to me and beg for treats by shrieking at me.

The other "big baby" chicken I have is a black Ameraucana hen; she'll hop right up and roost on the edge of the feed barrel when I go to get some feed in the hopes of getting a handout.

I also have some others that are fairly tame: standard cochins, wyandottes, and brabanters. Some of them are tamer than others; some of the cochin cockerels are real brats (they like to bite

), but most of them are okay. There's one cochin cockerel that will fly up and sit with me if I'm sitting on a bench that's out in the run.

hi,
def. my LF cochins are the friendliest ones in the coop, they do perfectly in the winter and are fine with snow aslong as there is somewere they can get acces to that is dry.

Funny - My Buff Orpington seemed to be the most calm. My Barred Rock has always been the most distrusting.

My 2 very common looking Rhode Island Reds started laying, and one is about to be classified as a dog because she is SO friendly with me.

(Total flock = 4 - all feed store quality)

Oh - and don't confuse friendly with outlandish begging!

I have Delawares, Australorps, Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Black Sex Links, Red Sex Links, a Silver Sussex, Easter Eggers, Ameraucanas, BLRWs, SLWs, Rhode Island Reds, Welsummers, and a Copper Marans. They're all pets and very friendly but the Ameraucanas and Wyandottes are slightly more aloof than the rest. Any of the breeds can be wild or tame, depending on how/if you interact with them.

Everyone will give different answers but honestly of all the common and then quite a few uncommon breeds I've known, nothing beats Oriental Gamefowl. My experience is in Shamos, but I'm sure it goes for most Orientals.

Oriental Gamefowl, such as Asils, Shamos, and Ga Noi, have been bred for centuries to live in small villages for fighting, in which they MUST be non-aggressive, calm, easily handled, and able to tolerate whatever comes their way. With this in mind, today's Shamo for example can even be born and raised for months in an environment with little to no human contact, near skittish breeds, and as soon as you get in there and give it just a little attention - (most likely he) will follow you like a puppy! Buy some adults, shipped across states, brought to a brand new home after being stuffed in a box, and out come birds that act as if they've lived on your property with you for months. Let them free range around your yard for just a couple weeks and you'll find they are truly a lot like a friendly cat or dog. Despite their raptor like appearance and cruel expression, Gamefowl like the Shamo breed truly are a tame, friendly chicken by genetic nature!

I've met both mean and skittish examples of a lot of breeds listed here previously but have never met nor heard of aggressive or truly wild-behaved Oriental Gamefowl, be it Thais, Brazilians, Shamos, Asils, Ga Nois, Malays. . .
