Hi Jim
I have three edition of the American Standard of Perfection the 1969 edition , 1989 edition , 2001 edition and soon the new edition. The General Scale of Points is on page 40 in the 1989 edition.

That is certainly true that you can greatly improve on your original hatchery stock. The issue with the Delawares, IMO, is that if you get them from somewhere that did not use Columbian Rock or other blood, you are ahead of the game. Sandhill Preservation probably has some of the best Dels, but then, they are not a big hatchery and in most of their breeds, pay more attention to quality than quantity. The key, as you know, is first, have a Standard to go by and cull, cull, cull to meet that. (Usually, when I refer to "hatchery stock", I am more referring to the biggies like McMurray, Ideal and Privett than the smaller operations.)

Hi speckledhen
I will be posting a picture of my chicks tomorrow they will be 8 weeks old. I would love to see a picture of yours. The last pictures I seen of your Delawares color and shape were very nice.

Thank you for posting the pictures. You have a very nice looking flock of Delawares. The hen that is older is she from the same flock as the others.

She is from the same flock, sort of. She has a different sire-not sure if her mother was in with the hens the last eggs came from, though. Her comb is terrible, but since I have so few girls, I am keeping her in with this group, mainly because of her size and tail black. Later on, when I have more to choose from, Kira will go back to the laying flock.

Her mother was NOT in with the hens from this last group. I don't think she's related to Isaac at all. Her comb may not carry over to all of her chicks. If you get a good pullet out of her, I'd keep it for the size.

I didn't think she was from any of the same hens, Janet, but I didn't want to say if I wasn't sure. Kira has excellent size and tail black and her hackles aren't bad. Her comb is really the only thing about her that is an issue and we know she and Jake were related by that alone. She has a very sweet disposition, too. She would only be pulled out if I raise up a girl with a better comb, plus Kira's best qualities. My DH is very fond of Miss Kira.

One reason I'm not really adding to my laying flock is so I can remove hens as needed when others come up in the ranks and put them with the layers. That way, I get to keep all of my Delaware ladies.

TN, hope you have lots of pens ready!
