Receiving an alert when you have a new PM - can this be done?

Like how you subscribe to a link and you get an e-mail indicating someone has posted to that link....is there a way to be notified automatically when you've received a new PM?

I know on a gaming forum I joined when you have a PM you get a popup that says "new message" and you can exit out the popup or click ok and it will take you to the message.

Well . . . I know nothing about computers and/or websites . . . but . . . everytime there is a new message in my inbox there is a little pop up with a chiken at the top of the page that says "check your in box" Isn't that what you're asking for?
