We have a 5 gallon bucket that we put the sideways drinking nipples in. We had it hung in their temporary coop and now have it on a cinder block in their permanent coop. I really love it. All you have to do is take the lid off the bucket and dump more water in. It doesn't leak, it won't tip over as long as there's a sufficient amount of water in it (I will start hanging it again if I find that to be a problem), they can't get any food or poop in it to make it nasty, and the birds figured out how to use it in 2 seconds. Plus, a 5 gallon bucket can hold a lot of water, obviously!I’m looking for recommendations for a good water for my flock. Something that doesnt leak and noteasily knocked over.
I do not put any other source in there with the chicks, I hatch between 15 to 30 a week and have never had them not figure it out.I get my chicks on Thurs and have a nipple waterer for them with a vertical nipple on it for now as I was told they are easier for young chicks. do you just tap their beak against them when you put them in the brooder to teach them how to use it? do you put any other type of waterer in their to start? I was told by some that I should have something else in JIC they don't pick up on the nipples right away.......
(sorry for the thread hijack)
The first one is called OverEZ OEZCW Chicken Waterer, I got them from Tractor Supply online. My local store doesn't carry them. They have matching feeders that hold a whole bag of food as well. It is AWESOME!!!!oh what is the name of the first one and where did you get it? I am going to need one for my coop and was just going to build one but really like the looks of that and like that it holds more than a 5 gal bucket!
with the brooder one (that is the one I have) how many would you use for 10 chicks? thought I read 1 nipple for up to like 12 but I am worried that won't be enough.
I like this set up!!! Bucket on the outside is REALLY nice when it has been raining for a while and the run is a muddy mess. Do you have any issues with cups leaking? I have about given up on cups.I'm trying to conserve space inside our run so the bucket is on the outside
My hero!! I love that setup! I'm working on something similar this season! How big a flock??? I use a rain fed (gutter off the roof) 275 gal food grade tote, to which I've attached PVC at the base and a series of poultry watering cups. But if you only have a couple birds, and a small area reserved for them, my solution is overkill. Likewise if you have access to running water - I don't (easily) at either of my coops, unless I want to hook 275' of garden hose together.
(Photo from before the gutter was attached. The automatic dog bowl is for the goat.)

Thank you! guess I will order another as a back up JIC! doesn't hurt to have 2.The first one is called OverEZ OEZCW Chicken Waterer, I got them from Tractor Supply online. My local store doesn't carry them. They have matching feeders that hold a whole bag of food as well. It is AWESOME!!!!
1 would be plenty for 10 chicks, but I personally would put in 2, just so that there is a backup in case something happens to one. I put mine on top of a heat plate and rarely (but it has happened) the nipple will get to close to the heat plate edge, triggering the nipple, and it empties the waterer into the brooder. It has only happened twice, the first time I believe it was user error, when I first got them and realized they should sit as close to the edge as possible without over hanging, and another when it was with the bigger chicks and they must have pushed against it when it was close to empty triggering it to empty into brooder. I hatch a lot of chicks and only had it happen twice in over 2 years.
I did notice when I set it up that if I overtightened the cup, it would leak from the rubber washer so I loosened it a bit and no leaks.I like this set up!!!
