red / black star chicken personality

I think you mean Golden Comet? My neighbor had some, as well as some black sex-links, they were all good foragers (all over my property as well as hers- they came up a thickly wooded hillside every day to see me) and were friendly, one was extremely talkative and would jump on my lap for a treat- I really enjoyed them!

I have a black star who is quite noisy but really friendly. My daughter carries her around like a baby and never gets pecked. She is also a fabulous layer. Consistenly big eggs and usually one a day.

Just a quick note on how funny they can be. I have a St. Bernard and the Black Star plays tag with the dog. The spend hours chasing eachother around the yard. Luckily my St. is very gentle.

One of my Black Stars recently died, after six years. Her pelvis was hurt when she was a chick, by my German Shepherd trying to be playful. Since the accident, she could not scratch the ground or walk without using her wings as crutches. Still, the brave, brave bird gave me a fresh egg each day for 4 1/2 years! Since she was sort of dependent on me, she bonded and came straight to me each time I called her.

Her sister is kind of neurotic. Sweet, but neurotic. I still don't know if it is sensitivity from being so roughly handled at the hatchery after birth, or if they are just naturally neurotic! Is skittish, runs away from hands, and is distrustful of hands.

They both gave mo more eggs than my family of 3 woud eat! Each gave me a fresh egg each day. Even during the winter.

But if you want a bird with a calm, trusting personality, I would not recommend a Black Star. Or maybe I just would not recommend getting a Black Star processed and shipped from a hatchery!
