Red bulbs -- why can I only find 25w or 250w?

So what exactly is the right wattage anyways ? I have a 4 x 8 coop . It only gets down in the teens here so I don't have any heat for them, but I feel bad about it.

I got my 75 watt and 100 watt heat bulbs in the reptile section of a large pet store. But as you may be out of time, you could fill a jug with hot water (capped) and put it in your coop, this should help a bit in a small coop. Another thing I did in a pinch was wrap insulation around the coop (4 by 4 like yours) with a tarp around it and bungee the whole thing on (make sure ventilation is not completely blocked). This will help keep the heat that your hens produce inside. I'm glad you're not sticking a big 250 watt bulb in that small coop!

Thanks for the reminder of the hot water jug... I'll definitely do that. Can't get the insulation today, but that's a good idea too.

Petsmart is another one...but as others have pointed out, they are expensive. They are in the reptile area. I was able to find 60s, 75s, 100s, and 150s.

You can also try to use a heated reptile rock - it may save money on you power bill and be adjustable.

I got a 75 watter at WalMart. It's a GE brand Floodlight. They also come in green, blue and "anti bug" colors.

Wonder why your WM didn't have them????

I get 75 - 100 watt bulbs and paint them red with a high heat paint from an auto store. Cheap and works for me!!

Home Depot had a 125 watt red heat bulb. Not too expensive either.
