Red Laced Cornish X and project talk (pics p. 8)

I had to clip wings again last night so I caught and handled all the birds , though of course the CX didn't get clipped . I could feel the keel bone protruding on the EE and Ameraucana but some of the WLRC cockerals had the keel nearly covered by breast muscle , surprizing because they look so slender . The largest CX cockeral was taking his sweet time going back to the coop so I picked him up and carried him . That boy is heavy ! He protested with lots of loud , gutteral squawking ; then after I set him down he turned around to face me , stood his neck feathers out , and beat his wings to challenge me .

It was all a bluff because I bumped him with the toe of my boot and he backed down .

I haven't visited this thread in awhile sadly, this heat here in SW Ok is brutal on these birds ( White Cornish ), they are doing well better than some of my other breeds. we have had Temps in the 101-105's every day for well over 3 wks now with no rain, and you thought h3ll was hot LOL shoooot.

I have aquired some fine Buckeye stock from a good breeder A few hen's and 2 Big Roo's, These will be my next ingrediant in this meat bird breeding project, so the saga continues.

Its been raining here frequently , too much in fact , and its adding to the humidity making our heat indexes average the same as yours . Those Buckeyes sound like they should work well .

Hey steve take a new pic of your big boy . . .

I'll try to get pics tomorrow . He's really not all that big , just bigger than I want him at this stage , and felt heavy after handling the other breeds . I'm guessing 10 to 12 lbs at approaching 15 weeks . I really should set up my hanging scale and get some weights so I'm not just guessing . They're eating their daily ration now in about 15 minutes and wanting more , but I'm trying to keep them as small and yet healthy as I can . They can browze on grass and usually have scraps also , but they really prefer the crumbles . On the other hand , the Ameraucanas are on full feed crumbles and always waiting on greens and scraps . I guess its always what they don't have that they want LOL . By the way , they get about one and a half cups of crushed limestone from a local quarry per day and are always wanting more calcium . They ate a gallon of it in three days so now I limit that also .

Interesting thread, glad I found it!

I've purchased 15 different breeds of roos that will be for the dinner table in time, the reasoning is to find which ones I like best for time to grow and amount of meat. They were all bought at the same time, are being raised the same, in the same pen with the same food, so it should give me a good indication of what they are going to do.

I have 2 WLRC, a BR and a Black SexLink that are the most promising for size so far. As teh BSL doesn't breed true, I'm doubting he'll be one that I keep. However, I am thinking of either the WLRC or the BR with one of my CX pullets and possibly later on with some of my other hens to see what comes of it.

I am trying to get away from ordering birds in the mail, wanting to raise my own

Yes they are, I plan to put the buckeye Roo's over my white Cornish hen's, I did get 2 very promising young Standard Cornish roo's (white) from this springs hatch. My Cornish XX young ones also are coming along nicely and they will also benifit from these Buckeyes too. Yesterday I moved some around rebanded and made some notes, so all is well in the secret labratory LOL.

I'm with you on that , but don't believe I can breed my own for the price the hatcheries sell them at .

silly me . . . I thought you were talking about your RLWC roo!

I wish ! I'm guestimating him at 4 lbs . I'm going to get a known weight to zero my scales and weigh some tomorrow .

I've got an American Bulldog with an ear infection , so this morning I cleaned his ear , treated it with antibiotics , and then opened a brand new bottle of violet blue wound dressing to treat the sores he scratched on his neck and the back of his ear yesterday . Holding the open bottle in the same hand that was holding his collar , I dabbed the worst place , and then he shook his head ...................... 90% of the contents of that bottle went flying out all over him and myself . If you're famialar with this stuff , you'll understand what I'm talking about when I say I'm feeling a little blue [ or purple ] now
