Ok, well now that I have them, I'm wondering what to do with them.

They are seven months old, just started to lay, but haven't been with a cock yet. They are really quite hefty birds, so I could just cook them. Or, perhaps borrow a nice roo, Ameraucana perhaps, from a friend (he has a very nice big black one), so I get some nice hatching eggs. They in turn would produce some olive eggers, and maybe even some nice meat birds.

I have a couple of medium sized Cockerels, who are from a very fast maturing breed. Maybe split them up and see which ones turn out better?

Have to say, the lacing on these pullets is gorgeous. Some are a darker, reddish colour, the others are more golden, but all nice, double lacing.

Hmm, looks like my dearly beloved has a new spring building project (coops, more coops)

Maybe she really knows someone by that name... clueless to an actual hatchery being called so.

When I prodded her a bit, she told me she bought day old, 25 chicks (minimum order), and they included an extra one or two. So I think they were really hatchery.

No biggie, I wanted them for a meaty project and they are quite nice and big for my purposes.

It has surprized me how many people I've met that have been raising poultry for a considerable time and consider the major hatcheries "breeders". Some, like my formr neighbor, can't even see the difference between their hatchery sourced poultry and poultry that actually fits the standard for the breed.

It's like that in all species... I think they see a cute face and never look further. My theory has always been if I'm going to spend everyday at the barn feeding them, I at least want something good to look at!

They should produce green eggers off an Ameraucana, but olive eggers usually require a cross to very dark egged breed like a Marans.

Steve, didn't you do some Am/Cornish crosses that turned out nice and big, or was it someone else?
