Red Laced Cornish X and project talk (pics p. 8)

It's been awhile since anyone posted here!

Here are some of my Ameraucana X CX F1s that I hatched in mid or late April. I have not weighed any, but they are not close to a CX in size. For reference, the grass they are in measured 12". They are a larger, heavier bodied birds than my adult Ameraucans and EEs. I lost the 5 largest in June. I left ice in their water and they had good shade, but temps went to around 105 while I was gone and that culled those that were not fit for high temperatures. If I had been able to get home from the Dr.'s office sooner I could have kept ice in their water and the canopy wet, but in the long run I suppose I might actually benefit by losing those unable to get through the temperture peak. I will add some nice F2 Cornish X Ameraucana pullets to a pen of these and hope to keep the project going into next year. The F2 pullets are slower growing but have a very meaty look. I really am not aiming towards the hard feathering of the F2s though..

It would be nice to have some of those to put in with my Polish/EE projest.
Trying to make a crested EE, but I would like to have a little more size on them.
EE aren't real big and Polish are a little smaller so the size is somewhere in between tight now. I don't have a real good start right now. I hatched out 5-3-8. All I have left right now are 1 hen and 2 roosters. The others I either sold because of colors or not fitting what I wanted and some died during the bad heat we had.

I'm going to try breeding the hen and one rooster together and do a hatch (next year), Then I'll put the roo over some EE hens and the hen under a Polish roo and get me some 3/4 both ways. I try taking the 3/4 back to some of the 1/2 and 1/2 and see if I can't make the crest just a tad bit bigger, not a puffy as a Polish tough.

Sounds like you're wanting a Creme Legbar. The crests aren't huge but they are one of the rare autosexing breeds and yes, they lay a blue egg. With enough body to them.

Not really on the Legbars. I don't care for the barring gene that much. When you have that it seems like it takes over.
I want them more like the European Araucana's, a tad bigger in weight though, not as big as a rock though. "Bout a 5 1/2 to 6 pounder.

ETA: I'm not knocking Legbars, never had them.

An interesting project you have there. Not sure my birds could help you, but could use a bit of change from some cheap hatching eggs if it would benefit us both. lol
They could possibly carry a barring gene from their CX mommas. Their daddies are either a blue Ameraucana, or a Silver one that I weeded out when looking for recessive yellow skin. The F1s pictured have slate, green, or yellow colored shanks.

I'm with you on that, really. The barring gene is probably what helps make them autosexing but I just don't care for the way they look. Never had them either. But they are crested and blue egg laying is all. Let us know how your project goes! And pictures, always.

Was checking out my youngest pen of Cornish chicks last night- and noticed I have two blue laced ones in it, as well as a half dozen chicks that I'm still thinking are going to be solid white. They have not developed any color yet, and are almost 2 months old I think.

This set of chicks hatched from a rooster swith- I put the BLR male in for a month or so-- and I did get a solid white chick from a blue silkie trial experiement-- so I'm thinking this guy does carry the white gene.

Your Blue laced male could be carrying recessive white, at least one female would also need to be carrying it to express it resulting chicks. Unless there is some dominant white, brought in to the mix via some white laced red blood, in which case, should have showed itself.

Recessive white chicks, in my experience, are evident at hatch, having yellow, to reddish yellow down in this line of Cornish. Going on to develop solid white feathering.

Now having said that I do have a couple youngsters that are showing some colored feathers, which are recessive white, that I suspect are possibly covering blue, or splash. I have too many white youngsters, hatched from colored stock, that I do not need for this project.
